Expected to attract top business, governmental and academic leaders, the con ference will focus on the economic strengths, and shortcomings of the mid- western area, the attraction of new industry and expansion of existing firms, creation of new jobs, governmental actions affecting economic growth and c a p i t a l i n v e s t m e n t requirements. "A major emphasis of the conference will be to create a positive image for the midwest by stressing the many inherent strengths of America's in dustrial heartland," said Lester W. Brann, Jr., president of the Illinois State Chamber of Commerce. Chicago. "We have no wish to concentrate only on negative factors in this region's economic growth picture, nor do we have any desire to engage in a war between the states because of the sub stantial economic growth which has occurred in the south during the past several years. "We hope to emerge from this conference with positive directions for a continuing forum where regional growth objectives can be reviewed and d e v e l o p e d , m e a n w h i l e providing an alliance for long- range economic planning goals for this seven-state area which will encourage the cooperative involvement of many economic interests." Delay Bull Valley Incorporation Hearing A hearing on the proposed referendum to incorporate a portion of Bull Valley has been delayed for the second time, and is now scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 22. The hearing was originally scheduled for May 25 in the chambers of Judge Roland Herrmann. However, at that time, some of the persons in volved in the incorporation proposal, chose not to become part of a village. " ~ Therefore, to adjust boun daries. a delay was requested to June 15. Wednesday, Judge Herrmann was scheduled to examine the new boundaries for the incorporation, and then schedule a referendum date, when voters in the incorporated area could decide if they want to become a village. The nature of this second delay is not known. The land in question includes \5 nearly two squacsjniles of land in three different townships. The, proposal could affect fifty-six property owners and 275 residents of the area. Another problem that arose was the discovery of an in cursion of boundaries into the Bull Valley village because of a small annexation by the city of McHenry. The petitioners are hopeful that Judge Herrmann will recognize that the area under consideration constitutes a village, and complies with all legal requirements. When the referendum is finally scheduled, and should it pass, the villagers would then elect governmental officials and begin operating as a municipality. • • • * Big words don't al ways convey big thoughts. A 36-year-old McHenry man was arrested and charged with driving while* intoxicated following his apprehension late Tuesday night by McHenry police. Roger Pergande of 5610 Woodland, McHenry, was arrested by Officer Robert Winters while driving on Green street. According to the police report. Officer Winters was on patrol in the 1200 block of Green street at about 11:30 p.m. when he stopped to allow some pedestrians to cross the roadway. While stopped, he observed the Pergande auto, also nor thbound on Green street behind the squad car, allegedly weaving from side-te-side. The vehicle stopped ap proximately fifteen feet behind the squad car, and Winters left is unit to investigate. Pergande then apparently backed his car up, nearly striking a car which was stopped behind him. Officer Winters had Pergande pull his car into a parking stall, where the officer allegedly detected the odor of alcohol. Pergande was taken to the police station, where he was charged with driving while intoxicated. His court date is scheduled for July 20.
