Nine McHenry County youth learned this lesson while participating in the Discovery Expedition designed by Wheaton College's Wilderness Learning Center. The wilderness requires . responsibility. That's just one of the lessons nine McHenry County youth learned in a recent fourteen-day Discovery expedition in Northern Wisconsin. OUTDOOR TOPICS by Bob Brmwtttr MERCURY OUTDOOR CONSULTANT STRANGE WAYS TO CATCH FISH In the early 1500's, the Indians of Cuba were reported to be using remora suckerfish as living fishing hooks. They would tie a line to the tail of the suckerfish, point it in the direction of nearby sea turtles and wait for the remora to attach itself to the quarry before pulling the line in. Using remora suckers to snare other marine life is one of many strange fishing methods which have come to the atten tion of Mercury outboards' fishing department. Equally as original is the Japanese tsuke raft, a device made of bamboo poles lashed together to form a large float ing platform. Anchored at sea, the tsuke raft becomes a favorite feeding spot for large fish which gorge themselves upon bait fish attracted to the shade provided by the raft. Similar methods are used by anglers along the southern coast of the United States, and even on inland lakes where floating rafts are placed above Kwer generation dams to keep aters away from intake pipes. One of the most effective primitive fishing methods evolved in South America where Amazon basin Indians learned that the roots of cer tain plants, when ground to fine texture and cast upon the water, would kill fish. The concoction, now used commercially as a fish manage ment tool called rotenone, constricts the blood vessels in a fish's gills, thereby blocking the flow of oxygen to the bloodstream. Affected fish swim to the top of the water where they're quickly grabbed by the waiting Indian fishermen. A Break Teacher: "This makes five times I have punished you this week. Now, Billie, what have you got to say?" Billie: "I'm glad it's Fri day." An Honorable One P e r s o n n e l M a n a g e r : "H-mm-m, you say yoii were discharged from your last job?" Applicant (meekly): "Yes sir." "Do you mind telling me why?" "Not at all; my enlistment was up in the Navy." They found irresponsible behavior is not rewarded. The environment demands each person to face up to his own actions and beliefs about himself. Dunne the long days the young men walked the cutting edge of learning and un derstanding as there was nowhere to run from the dif ficult tasks of survival. Talk proves cheap: It's character in action that counts.
