Box 205 • Crystal Lake, Illinois 60014 • (815)459-2641 by Estelle Atwell Board meetings are generally strictly business events but last week's regular monthly board meeting of Helping Paws directors was something of a reunion too. Dick Klemm, past president of Helping Paws, now chairman of the McHenry County board, attended. The keynote of his talk was not an "auld lang syne" theme but one of present and future cooperation with Helping Paws aims to better serve pet owners and pet adopters at the Animal Control center. Results of spay neuter month are not yet conclusive. However, to date there have been 147 spay-neuter surgeries performed under this program with a cost to Helping Paws of $2,382.25. Recognition was expressed to the members of the McHenry County Veterinary association for their generous cooperation and support,'and to Cindy Caba, board member, who organized and implemented the entire program herself. Among matters discussed and approved -- when an animal is adopted under HP contract there is a follow-up with a visit from a field representative who checks to see that all contract obligations are being met. It is a paid position. We are looking for personnel to serve as field representatives. Those in terested may call the office 459- 2641 between 10 to 2, Monday through Saturday, or 312-658- 7221 evenings. A filing cabinet is needed for the office. If any of our readers have one to donate, please contact the office. A few of the members are taking the test for Humane Investigator certification -- they are Ron Nelson, Denise Morjal, and Bernie Coonen. A truly ambitious project was discussed at the meeting - the possibility of joining with other Humane agencies to open "a mini shelter in McHenry county. All agreed how desperately needed this shelter is. At present Animal Control center takes in only stray dogs. There isn't a place for cats or home-owned animals. That's why such a shelter would help meet the needs of our com munity. Initial discussion concerned exploring the possibility of land, building on that land, or securing a building already constructed. If anyone can known as NOVAK EN TERPRISES, located at 2720 Russet Rd., McHenry, Illinois 60050. Dated this sixth day of June, A.D. 1977. Vernon W. Kays County Clerk (Pub. Learn Camping, Horsemanship At 4-H Clinic Young persons throughout Illinois interested in horses and camping can combine their interests this summer at Camp Shaw-Waw-Nas-See, near Manteno, says Natalie Kronst, Summer Extension adviser, home economics, McHenry county. A total of twelve hours of horsemanship instruction will be offered for six weeks during the regular camping program. Some of the topics to be covered in the basic program include proper care, grooming, feeding, saddling and bridling, control, and showing techniques. The advanced program, July 25-29, will include beginning jumping, changing leads and other advanced techniques. Each camper will be provided individual as well as group instruction. Young persons do not have to be a member of 4-H to attend the camp and participate in the horsemanship training. PAGE 9 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, JUNE 24, 1977 County Herd First Illinois DHI Herds V * Complete Record Year Illinois herds enrolled in the Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) program completed a record-smashing year ending in April according to Dave Plocher, McHenry county Extension adviser. The 1,049 herds, completing the full year on test, averaged 14,197 pounds milk and 540 pounds butterfat per cow. These results indicate a record increase of last year of 900 pounds milk and 31 pounds fat per cow. This is the largest increase in production in over 50 years of Illinois record keeping, says Plocher. Forty-seven more herds were enrolled in 1977 than last year. Plocher explains cows not enrolled in a record program average only about 10,400 pounds of milk per cow. The Robert Gerloff Holstein herd, Woodstock, had the highest butterfat average of 783 pounds. The Larry Nelson and Jonas Holstein herd, Rock City, had the highest milk average of 21,102 pounds. The top herds in butterfat production per cow for other breeds were: Ayrshire-Gerald Poppe, Chenoa, 593 pounds; Guernsey-Myron Erdman, Chenoa, 680 pounds; Jerseys - C.A. Schweigert and Sons, Tremont, 5% pounds; Brown Swiss- Becker Farms, Moro, 620 pounds; Milking Shorthorn- Kingsdale Farms, Oneida, 538 pounds. Over 44 percent of the herds tested reached or exceeded 550 pounds butterfat per cow. Twenty herds reached the 700 pound level and 213 herds reached or exceeded 600 pounds butterfat per cow. According to Plocher, an impartial supervisor weighs the milk of DHI herds. Milk samples are tested for butterfat content by the supervisor or sent to a central testing laboratory. University of Illinois computers calculate and analyze the records.
