V. picture tube can be worth almost nothing in four years? That your radio or record player loses about 10 per cent of its value a year? That your clothes depre ciate anywhere from 10 to almost 50 per cent a year? The Internal Revenue Ser vice, movers and insurance companies have tables wftich determine how much personal possessions are likely to depreciate in the course of a year. Depreciation depends on what an item is, and the type of use or abuse it has received in the years since it was purchased. If your personal posses sions are stolen or destroyed, mo6t insurance companies will only pay the owner a fraction of what they would cost to replace today. Usually, insurance com panies determine the "actual cash value" of stolen or destroyed possessions by hav ing a claim representative and the insured reach an agree ment on what a destroyed or missing possession of like kind and quality would cost to replace today. The insur ance company then depreci ates the item based on what the replacement cost is minus a percentage for the years an item has been used. For instance, a living room sofa purchased five years ago might cost $700 to replace today even though it may have cost only $500 when orginally purchased. Since upholstered furniture normal ly depreciates at about 10 per cent a year, the adjuster could allow $350 on the claim. But now a major insurance company is offering full re placement value for personal property losses. Under this endorsement, the homeowner receives the Ml sum to re place stolen or destroyed property with an item of like kind and quality. There is no depreciation. (In the case of the sofa, the policy holder could buy a $700 sofa.) On the average, according to the Kemper Insurance Companies, the additional premium for replacement coverage on an apartment dweller's personal property coverage is about $10 a year. For a homeowner whose dwelling is valued at $30,000, the coverage averages an add additional $20 a year. For a homeowner whose dwelling is valued at $30,000, the coverage averages an additional $20 a year. "Inflation has pushed up the cost of replacing most any household items in addi tion to the cost of replacing the structure itself," Hank Osowski, Consumer Relations Representative of the Kemper Insurance Companies said. "Under the actual cash value method of adjusting claims, we found many consumers were not able to make them selves 'whole' within the terms and limits of their per sonal property insurance cov erage. The replacement value endoresement corrects that problem." The endorsement does not apply to property which can not be replaced (art objects and antiques), property not maintained in good or work able condition (junk or worn out but not discarded items), and property not being used by the consumer or stored for such use. Especially valuable items such as some antiques, furs, jewelry, etc., should be ap praised and scheduled sepa rately on a policy. M y m o t h e r idoesn't under stand. She's not | going to stop me from loving him. What can I do? I tried talking to I her. OUR REPLY: We doubt if your mother would try and stop you from loving anybody. Love is that elusive, wonderful, universal concept which binds mankind together. You can communicate clearly with your mother about your love for this older guy. Share your thoughts. Take re sponsibility for your feelings and actions. Be honest, open and truthful. Be certain about your intentions. In the end, after you and your mother have had an ex tensive exchange of views, you should accept her decisions. In essence, you are a guest in your parents' home. Accept the way things are. Obey their rules, eventually you'll get the recog* nition you deserve.
