PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. JUNE 24. 1977 EARL WALSH It has been a long time since Chicago area baseball fans have had so much to be excited about Nobody gave us the slightest idea that both teams would be in first place in June The Cubs lost a couple of ball games in Los Angeles, but did ho worse than a draw in big brawl on the field. • They talk about the lively ball this year. Maybe they should investigate the lively bats the way those Boston Red Sox are , clearing the fences. Riding through the coun tryside. you can see the far- . mers won't have to wait for the Fourth of July for corn to be knee high. It's above the knee .•now. Pick your own spot. Ed Houlihan received a prize^^ather's Day card from his fwTffly last Sunday. They wrote notes that covered from ; 1950 to 1977. That's one card Ed won't be throwing away. Now comes the All-Star selections. Sometimes we wonder if the perfect system will ever be devised. In some cities the fans really stuff the ballot box. So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR Kather than let the players choose the teams, the thought was to give the game back to the fans. One fan--one vote would be fine. You may be sure it doesn't work that way. For instance. Boston's Fred Lynn is hitting a lowly .220 and not doing too great in any department. Hisle of Minnesota is hitting .300 with 16 home runs and going strong. Results. Lynn is in the top three outfielders in the voting. Hisle is number 11. After looking forward for weeks toward an afternoon in Comiskey Park, weather reports now predict rain and thunderstorms. Into each life some rain must fall. Never see Grandpa Busscher, but he keeps sending in news from McHenry Country Club. Must remember, when fall sports roll around again, the ending to Art Hoist's takeoff: "Poems are made by fools like me. But only God could referee". DIVOT DOLLS M.C.C. Now Is The Time For Athletic Physicals The early summer is an ideal time to obtain physical examinations for all sports - girls and boys. No student will be allowed to participate in a sport - game or practice - until he or she has presented the school with a completed llhysical examination - this is good for one calendar year. The incoming ninth grade physical is acceptable for athletics, but all upper class student athletes should obtain last year's athletic physical card (or a new card) from the Athletic Director to present to their physician for a physical examination. HOLD CAR WASH The McHenry Pigtail league will sponsor a car wash in the parking lot back of East campus Saturday, June 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds will be used to buy uniforms and equipment and to help with insurance costs. With the current champion of the McHenry Country club women's group. Judy Smithson. shooting a net 74 she made it a little difficult for the gals to "Beat the Champ" on Tuesday. However, a small group shot well enough to do just that. Shooting the best game in her golf life to date. Betty Phelan netted a cool 68. followed by Barb Leight with a net 69. Joan Buss carded a net 70. Ethel Koehler a net 71 and Bernice Dolce a net 73.-All nice nets. In addition to the "Beat the Champ" event a contest for the longest drive on No. 4 was held. Carol Cooney in Class A won that; in Class B it was Barb Weber, Class C was Carole Seese and in Class D. Mary Mutschinsky. On the par 5 No 5 hole Dee Overton sank her approach to hold par while Toots Gersted kept her score down by sinking her approach on No. 12. Lots of birdies were flying around the course. Judy Smithson birdied 12 and 15; Betty Phelan picked one up on No. 9. Joan Buss a couple on No. 6 and No. 14, Carol Cooney on No. 15 and No. 14, Gloria Ott on No. 18, Ethel Koehler on No. 14, Gene Napier on No. 18 and Cahr Zwissler on No. 6. In Class A there was a three- way tie for low putts of 31 each. The honors were shared by Nancy Wilkins, Betty Phelan and Alvina Yopp. In Class B Lou Roels had low putts with 30; in Class C Ethel Koehler had low putts with 34; and in Class D a four-way tie found Carol Bolger, Mitzi Kenton. Betty Smith and Phyllis Bird sharing the honors with 44 putts each. Next week brings the first of four weeks of Match Play Tournament so, no doubt, the ladies will be out practicing for this, one of the more serious golf events. Word has gotten back to the home club that Carla Wright recently was a guest at another club and did the name of McHenry proud by having low net for the day. Nice going, Carla! Doug Freund scored 4 runs on 3 Before weighing anchor this summer, Illinois State boating enthusiasts are advised to make "safety" part of the crew. "Too many accidents afloat happen because simple safety precautions are disregarded," says the Insurance Information Institute. "All too often, needless death, injury and property damage result." The Institute cited U.S. Coast Guard statistics as a reminder of what can go wrong once you're out on the water. In Illinois alone there were 124 boating accidents in 1976 resulting in 20 deaths, 30 in juries and $235,723.78 in property damage. Across the nation last year, 8,954 recreational vessels were involved in accidents resulting in 1,264 deaths. Capsizing was the leading cause of fatalities- 510, followed by falls over board-267. The Institute urges boaters to be sure that their vessel's fuel, electrical and steering systems are in top working order by following these basic suggestions: -Check exhaust and intake pipes for blockages, and clean them thoroughly. -Be sure all fuel and elec trical connections are tight. -Check lines and steering cables for wear and fraying. -Clean and lubricate all working parts, and check their housing and supports. It might also be a good idea to take advantage of expert safety inspection, the Institute suggests. The Coast Guard Auxiliary, a voluntary, non- military organization created by Congress to promote safety in recreational boating, will provide a thorough safety check of your boat's equipment and general condition. Before you finally launch the boat, make sure there are o?*rs, plenty of life preservers avid a fire extinguisher on boar^-just in case. It makes good s^ense to check the weather forecast in advance to avoid potential trouble. And, don't forget to let someone know w'nen you're going out and whe,n you expect to return. Of course, th'ere may be no need for boating safety precautions if your boat is stolen before you ever get it in the water. The Institute urg^s boat owners to reduce 'the chance of theft by storing boating equipment in the house or garage and removing the wheels from the boat, trailer when the vessel is not in use. * It is a good idea to r.nake a list of all the equipment you have in the boat, including serial numbers of the items. Etch your driver's license or boat number on as many items as possible for positive iden tification. As a final line of defense, check wi.th your insurance representative to make sure the insu/ance coverage on your boat is adequate for your needs.
