There's An Answer (by Norman Vincent Peale and Ruth Stafford Peale) 18-Year-Old Called "Shameface" Q. I am writing you because I need help real bad. You see, I am 18 years old and shamefaced. I am tired of being shy. My friends » pick at me, calling me Shameface and Stuckup. Here is an example. My friends go to see chicks and I go with them sometimes. But I don't ever get out of the car. What's the matter? Am I crazy or something? Ashamed to talk to girls. They want to go out with me, but I am too ashamed to talk to them. I'd give anything in the world not to be shy no more. What makes a person shamefaced? Please tell me and tell me what to do about overcoming it. A. Such acute shyness as you describe would seem to indicate psychological trouble. Perhaps you could use help from a competent psychological or spiritual counselor. If, as you say, you would give anything in the world not to be shy, you can start by giving yourself time to have a study made as to the cause of your abnormal emotional reactions. If you had pain in your body you would go to a doctor. Since you have, shall we say, a pain in your mind, it is sensible to go to a physician of the mind, preferably your pastor or, failing that, a good psychological counselor. In the meantime, try going out with a girl, no matter how hard it may seem. You could be surprised at yourself and end up having a good time. We have a booklet, How To Have A Good Day, which has helped others with questions such as yours, and a copy of it is on its way to you. Ai yone reading this column who wishes a free copy may write for one. Address your request to Dr. and Mrs. Peale, Box 500, Pawling, NY 12564. Husband Dotes On His Younger Sister Q. I'm married over five years to a man (child) who dotes on his younger sister. He can't relax and sit at home and she is the same way. She's always leaving her husband alone while she gets into the car and heads off circling past my house. He, in turn, drives toward her home looking for her. They waste so much precious gas just riding around looking for each other as they meet on the by ways, never coming to the home. How would you solve such childishness? A. It would seem that either your husband and his sister think they have a lot to talk over which requires privacy, or neither of them wants to grow up and move on into mature relationships in their marriages. In any case, the solution must begin with yourself. If your husband is acting childishly, it could mean you are assuming the role of mother rather than just being a wife. Stop checking on him and get involved in worthwhile activities of your own. This will reduce your husband's feeling of need to escape and at the same time add attractive and interesting dimensions to your own personality. Incidentally, Tiave you and your brother-in-law tried collaborating on some family barbecues and other fun times which get you all together in a relaxed and happy atmosphere? Rejected And Desperate Q. I have been in the hospital in deep depression. Here it is: I am a widow 53 years old, have gone with this man over six years. Two years ago he asked me to marry him and I told him I had to pay off my mother's funeral first. When it was paid I told I was ready and he says I turned him down, so he started seeing me less. Then one Satuniay night he didn't show so I called to see if he was O.K. and he said he had been mowing the lawn and just forgot. In the meantime, I've seen his car at another widow ladv's house. I still love him, and this is driving me out of my mind. Please help me in some way as I am at my last stand. A. If you have spent six years going with a man who now forgets that he had an engagement with you and his car is seen at another lady's house, one would assume that there is no real prospect in this relationship. Maybe you only think you love him. At any rate, he does not seem to return your love in the full measure required for a happy marriage. Better start looking around for other male friends who won't forget an engagement. (Perhaps you would like to find an answer for yourself to a problem that you can share with others in There's An Answer! If there is something you would like to ask Dr. and Mrs. Peale to discuss in this column, write to them in care of Box 500, Pawling, NY 12564).
