**» PAGE 24-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, JULY 6. 1977 Sunnyside Area1 Betty Messer 344-2494 Begin Septic System Check In Sunnyside « For the past week members of the Department of Health have been checking septic HORNSBYS systems in the Sunnyside area. - Mr. Hansen from the Health department who is working in this area, said people are receiving them very well. When faulty systems are found, they must be repaired. A prime concern is checking homes along the water to be sure none are emptying into any lake or river adding to the pollution. People from the Health department are working under Dr. Johnson, head of the McHenry county Department of Health. This is being done in compliance with new health laws set for the county. During the remainder of the summer and possibly into the winter, members will be checking every septic system along every lake, river, creek and stream in the county. The county is getting assistance from the federal government in an effort to stop pollution of our waterways. New people moving into the area will be happy to know that under the new tow, homes being sold must have^he septic systems checked before the side. Repairs must be taken care of by the present owner. Neglect and improper care can mean costly repairs for new home owners, I, lor one, wish this law would have'been in effect 2 years ago. JUVENILE PROBLEM Once again a problem with juveniles in the area must be brought to the attention of residents. Village clerk Eleanor Schuberth has received a number of reports of juveniles damaging property in the area, even to a point of destroying fruit trees and grape vines. Police are going to be called when children are found damaging property and returned to tfceir parents by an officer. If you are having trouble with anyone damaging your home or see someone in a neighbor's yard, you are encouraged to call the police. Efforts must be made to stop senseless destruction of village antr private property. Remember the new number for the Sunnyside police is 38&3250. In order to avoid a that epidemic, the Department of Public asking our help. HowcafFwe help? By talcing steps that will assist in eliminating Culex mosquitoes. You see, the St. Louis En­ cephalitis virus is transmitted to people by a certain species of mosquito...called Culex....- which have previously bitten infected birds. In other words, if the Culex bites an infected bird, and then bites you, she can transmit the virus to you. Although the Culex feed primarily on birds during the first part of the summer, they usually change their habits about mid-summer, begin to bite people. State health experts, who have been collecting mosquitoes and blood samples from birds since early Spring, are alarmed at the large numbers of Culex nuggyiitoes they are finding in the southern third of the statefrom St. Clair County on south. Although the Culex have not as yet begun to feed on people, the state health department fears that, if these mosquitoes are not eliminated before mid­ summer, we may experience outbreaks of St. Louis En­ cephalitis later this year. What can you do? First, you can urge your local officials to conduct an intensive mosquito abatement if they have not alreac one. •- Then, you can help on an individual basis...no matter which part of the state you Uve in...by removing from • your yard or premises, any con­ tainers which may collect even small amounts ofwatw, woh as flower vases, hirowmSiP tin cans, et& TheCutexlrUI lay eggs in these small pudttes of still water. •' If you have a water-collector in your yard which you cannot remove, or which you wish to keep....such as a birdbath or other ornamental item...make sure it is emptied out at least (Mice a week and refilled with clean water. .0 Another thing you can do is trim back any dense shrubs or bushes growing in or near your yard. Small puddled often accumulate under heavy bushes, creating ideal breeding places for the Culex. If you trim or thin your shrubbery, the sun and air will dry up these puddles.
