m iPAQE6-PLAlNDEALER- WEDNESDAY, JULY 0, 1977 EARL WALSH If holiday deadlines don't ' make a fellow dizzy, all be can |'do is try something stronger. *'-J This column and the entire * sports page were assembled "last week in order to be ready for fireworks week. The Fourth of July is really ' Independence Day, historic, in this country of ours. fcnr. _ ' Patriotism ran high in days Sone by. If it lagged, celebrations with fiery orators brought it up to a peak. The ban on uncontrolled ' fireworks took something out of the day for kids. It also saved a lot of eyes. .•Boys used to strap on a cap and strut around like '-tootin' cowboys. Holiday accidents give a person the heebie-jeebies, especially when you read predictions that several hun dred people will lose their lives while on outings. As far as highway accidents concerned, it still seems if all of us obeyed speed iTrj-* and watched the right side of the road for regulatory and SPORTS EDITOR warning signs, there wouldn't be too many accidents. Swimming and boating claim lives when people are out for a good time. Too bad. It is better to be a statistician than a statistic. Some of our readers are showing interest in the coming Great American Horse Show coming to Northbrook July 13- 17. Superstars of the horse world will compote. You will also see entertainment featuring dancing horses, rough riders, high jump contest and others. Rules prevent me from printing prices in a news story, but you can pick up the phone and ask questions. Being an (rid pony boy, I want to be there when those beautiful animals go into their act. With the holiday deadlines past, w® should get back to normal until Labor Day. PICKUP: Our ancestors thought nothing of working 16 hours a day.
