President Carter has called, for an all-out effort to insulate every home and public building, to cut down on this needless waste. An insulation contractor once told me, "You'd be surprised how many homes are poorly insulated. The aver* age home-buyer never bothers to look "In the attic. If a builder wants to, an easy place to cover up is by skimp ing on the insulation, throwing the batts here and there with out tucking them in carefully/' This got me to thinking. I just wonder how many home owners - particularly widows and elderly people - live under the assumption their attics are 'insulated,' when in fact, much of their heat is escaping through the roof. I guess we take a lot of things for granted. An employee of The Wrigley Company in Chicago said they go overseas and test-market new products in Europe. 'The American people are so gullible they'll buy anything,** he told me. A young man fropiihe Middle East, studying in one of our colleges, once told me how naive, we are. "I could stay here in America, go into business, and become a million aire," he said. "You Americans will buy anything, sign any thing, believe anything. We couldn't survive where I live if we did our business Jhe way you do.** If you and If- say, in buying* home-take for granted what we can't sw, whether it's in the attic or under the floor, how mucftfmore do we take ourselves for granted? By that, I mean we go through life seldom asking who we are or whatwtstand for. Cerfturies ago/the Creek philosopher Plato (428*347 B.C.) said, "The life which is unexamined is not worth living." That's pretty strong medicine. But if it makes sense to examine the attics of the houses we live in, it makes even more sense to examine our minds, those "attics Of the soul." •it fill •U to :D* 10 44 Mi r3t Ji jy.l 1 YHf! bdt •ii*. 1 Hastings is editor of The Illinois Bipriit in S|wkigfieki For and about Teenagers BY PATRICK EDWARD THU WEEK'S LETTER: I'm derstanding.
