ALL OCCASIONS EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR It was very-gratifying to hear current reports of operations, plus a review of the history of #the McHenry Library Monday •Sight. m It was a long struggle from a 'iheager beginning to the present time when McHenry 'can be proud of a beautiful, efficient library. i'4 Long years ago, it was my lot 4o dedicate the library before a Jarge crowd in the East Campus auditorium. The dedication was "To The Bet terment of The People of JMcHenry". Many people have worked with dedication toward that betterment. Each gave of his or . her talents in various ways. In *'addition, many gave money 'since the library was not ' founded on tax revenue. The establishment of an historical room in the library has been one of my dreams. Some items have come in. Many more are needed. If you have any papers, old pictures or the like which you would like see preserved for future enerations, please do no delay. ° In driving all over the area to compile information on the *'oldest buildings for the ^.'Bicentennial, it became ^distressingly obvious that the ' real "Old Timers" are no 'longer with us. The time is now to put McHenry history together. Turning to sports. The Sox are real. •b*Never a doubt! After winning nine straight games, the Sox threw one away at Detroit, then bounced back before a wild home crowd to beat the good Kansas City team 4 to 2. Meanwhile the Cubs are in need of pitching help. Who isn't? Wedon't think Richie Allen is the answer. Or, can he pitch? A close look will tell you what put the Cubs on the skids. When their number one catcher, George Mitterwald, was in jured in a big donnybrook, the team wasn't the same. What I think about people, especially trusted employees, who write books about deceased prominent people, couldn't be printed in a nice, family newspaper. Stopped at Roger Freund's Tire Mart and memories went back to our many baseball discussions with his father, the late Walt. Looked across the street and it seemed we should see Petie Schaefer in his groceries and meats store. He moved around like he was on roller skates. The West McHenry State Bank was across the street and the famous Wattles Drug Store was next door. Glenny and "Butch" were real attractions. We could always get a story for this column out of a visit from Glenny. Always chuckle when we think of the days when "Butch" operated the store while Glenny was in military service. Bolger's Drug Store ad vertised "The Store That's Always Busy". . I". " Butch came back the next week with an ad - "The Store That's Never Busy. Jijo waiting." ' . Kids or grownups could buy candy and ice cream from Grandma Weber and Aunt Clara at the Northwestern Hotel. If you wanted a brew with foam on the top, you could amble up to Matt Laures' tavern. In the earlier days, it was Henry Heimer's (dace, and a fine man was Henry. . Of course, there were others. It would take a lot of space to cover the whole street. 9-Yoor^OM Wing Trophy For Largo Fish One of the highlights of Jody Justen's recent vacation at Lake Nokomis, Wis., was the trophy she received for winning a weekly fishing contest. The trophy was presented to Jody by a bait shop in Tomahawk, Wis., for catching the largest perch. The perch measured im inches and was just short of 1 lb. Jody is the 9-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Justen. Most citizens favor laws which give them an advantage in business. *** t The United States may lose a war, someday; it can happen.
