Box 205 • Oyiul Lake, Illinois 60014 • (815)459-2641 by Estolle Atwell Sidewalk ig\ July, 23 Loud and clear over the store's speaker system on a recent torrid day came the message: "If anyone shopping in the store has a station wagon parked with two dogs inside, go to their aid immediately. They seem to be having trouble breathing and are panting excessively." This problem has been called to pet owners attention often, but it can't be emphasized enough. Parking lots rarely have shaded areas. If trees have been planted they are mostly immature and it will be some years before their shade benefits are effective. The shopper browses in the store's air-condiitoned comfort where no dogs are allowed. Is she forgetting how hot the closed interior of a car can become? If her car is air- conditioned she may have failed to lower the windows for the dogs' comfort when she parked. In a very short time her pets can suffer heat prostration, often fatal. Of course, dogs accustomed to being your car companions can and do put oo a strong pitch to go along even when the thermometer reads in the nineties. Then it's true kindness to say no and leave them where they are comfortable and out of danger. If your dog is a fairly regular car passienger carry a large plastic jug of water and a bowl in the car so the dog can have a drink whenever needed. Dogs consume large quantities of water in the heat and should always have an ample supply. The symptoms of beat prostration are heavy panting, nervousness, perhaps vomiting, and finally collapse. Treatment is to gradually immerse the dog in cool water if possible. Or apply ice packs to the head and neck. After which, get the dog to a vet in short order. On Saturday, July 23, Helping Paws workers will be tagging in various Crystal Lake areas. One way of directly supporting animal welfare is to (rick up a Helping Paws tag and we ap preciate it if you do. This handsome male looks a bit wistful - who wouldn't if he were homeless? Let's hope that situation is only temporary. Someone deserves a beautiful pet like this. He's available for adoption at the County Shelter, 11908 Banford road, Woodstock, open 8:30 to 4:30, phone 338-7040. He's about 2 years old. (Editor's note: This is the thirty-sixth in a series of especially written articles for McHenry county readers. Joseph*Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health staff. This article is "Coping - Problems of -Middle Age for Women.") The crisis of middle age is different in many respects for woman than the crisis faced by middle aged men. This period of time often bringsfjnore changes in women than for a man. For a man, there is the prospect of job stability, which can offer some security. For many women, however, par ticularly mothers who are not working, this is the time when the children are beginning to leave home, thus drastically changing her entire life style. Many women are also ex periencing the onset of menopause during this phase of life. The menopause can have rather devastating physical and psychological effects. A woman going through the "change of life" is ex periencing the most drastic endocrine changes since pregnancy and childbrith. Not surprising is the fact that the women who have had the most trouble with post partum ad justment, and the greatest difficulty during their monthly periods, also tend to have the most difficulty during menopause. For these women, a gynecologist is invaluable in providing advice and-or medication to relieve the symptoms. Psychologically, a woman in middle life may feel leas at tractive and desirable to her husband and family and can develop a feeling of wor- thlessness causing her to neglect herself. This pattern once developed often leads to increased feelings of depression and withdrawal. It is extremely important to seek help from a doctor, counselor, or even an understanding relative or friend at the time that symptoms of depression or irritability begin to occur. Equally important to the woman at this period of time is to be involved in a meaningful activity. Everyone, par ticularly at times when they may be feeling- vulnerable, needs to have a purpose or goal to be striving for.. shots, owner moving anu cannot take dog. Revive VJ Day Parade With Music In Motion While the McHenry Fiesta days do not include the popular drum corps competition this year, residents can still see the top corps performing in the area. Sunday night, July 24, as the grand finale to "Music In Motion", six of the top corps will compete and two local corps will perform exhibitions at the Woodstock high school football field beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the gate. Music In Motion is the 1977 revival of the former VJ Day festivities which were held annually in Woodstock until a couple of years ago., - The drum corps competition will end a complete weekend of activities acknowledging the U.S. victory over Japan, ending W W I I . A parade will begin at the Woodstock city square at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The parade boasts over fifty entries, in cluding the drum corps which will be competing that night. There will also be floats, motorcycles, horses, antique cars...just about everything that makes a parade what it is. Music In Motion was the brainchild of a group of con cerned citizens of the Wood stock area, who regretted seeing the annual VJ Day parade discontinued. There are twelve persons on the committee, including Mike Palmquist. "Once the parade and pageant was dropped, no one seemed willing to get the thing going again," he said. "But a group of concerned citizens thought the traditional VJ Day parade and pageant was a good thing. We decided to call it Music In Motion, and hope it becomes an annual event. "In faft," he added, "we've already begun planning for next year's festivities.'*, \ • . . ) Not That Kind "My poor brother," said the inmate of a rest home, "is suffering from fallen arches." "What a shame!" soothed the visitor from the public wel fare committee. "Flat feet, eh?" "Not at all," corrected the inmate. "A bridge fell on him." J •n"mTTTr rmnn. . . i n „ ¥ T .
