EARL WALSH So I Hear Twas a festive week in McHenry as another Marine- Festival came to an end Sunday night. Each year, beginning with f the days of boat races and water shows, a few people lead the way while many others lend their support to keep the event alive. It was nice to see Chief Espey named Parade Marshal as he nears the day of his retirement. And it was an extra bonus for those of us who know her to see his lovely daughter, Margie, riding in the Don Howard convertible with Dad. Those who saw Bob Freund receive a plaque at the Thur sday night concert for his distinguished service were impressed as he humbly gave credit to the late Paul Yanda. Paul was Mr. Music in McHenry for many years and was one happy fellow when the City of McHenry constructed a new band shell in the park. Our White Sox should never have gone to Kansas City to play baseball. They are hanging onto first place by their fingernails. The Cubs finally tumbled out of first place. As in life, baseball teams find the rise to the top most thrilling. It's the drop from the top of the ladder that hurts. Bouncing back can spell happiness. _ , „ % It appears that Dave Giusti, veteran pitcher acquired from Oakland, will be the answer to Cub prayers. Sorry to hear of the death of A1 Weiss. A pleasant memory of A1 comes to mind. One time when we were competitors in business and I ran into a down period in health, A1 came in and gave some help. That's what I call being big. We may start a weather bureau in our neighborhood. Alvina has a windmill to keep us posted on the direction of the wind. The Ford Hanfords have a rain gauge. What we need now is somebody with the rheumatiz or aching corns to predict rain or storms. Of course, when Bill Kreutzer washes his car you can bet on rain. After Lillian Stoffel gave us SPORTS EDITOR _l the information on the Michael Justen house, her sister, Mrs. Fred (Rose) Peterson, showed us her scrapbook with the big house and many other old time pictures. Aunt Rose was visiting her nephew and his wife, the A1 Phannenstills. - And that's a home we like to visit. Carolyn Bauer also called. She had an old obituary in one of her scrapbooks that told of the Michael Justens moving from their farm, later occupied by the John Regner family, to their new home. It has been a blow to hear about several of our school officials moving to different areas. Now comes a real Mow. Gary Collins, the fellow we trusted to hoist us into the press box at McCracken Field, is moving to the Crystal Lake school. Gary is destined for greater heights in coaching as the years come along. He has what it takes. Finer men are hard to find. AT THE LONGHORN - Met the Joe Wagners-Joe doesn't think there will be a World Series in Chicago this year --He has a plan--He will watch Sox games--I will watch Cub games--Neither of us will get high (or higher) blood pressure--A1 Jourdan stopped at our table--He can't sleep nights after a Sox game--even if they win--Verona Kent, Clara "Toots" Overton and Mary Powers sat nearby-- They weren't worrying about the Sox or Cubs--Just good friends--nice to meet and greet--The Bill Wilsons were down the line--missed a word or two or three with than--A couple of our favorite waitresses (they are all favorites) were vacationing-- but a sweet gal served us--Our motto is'"Fun and food mixv well. A favorite around McHenry Country Club for many years, Carl Schmidt, suffered a heart attack on the course according to John Busscher's report last week. (Carl is John's cousin, but you needn't hold that against him). Seriously -- we Join Carl's host of friends in wishing him a speedy and complete recovery - - and as par John's suggestion have sent a few prayers up that-a-way.
