Do We Da The bare hardwood floor is enjoying great popularity among designers and decor ators these days. It's being hailed as a renaissance by some; the wave of the future by others; and as an excit ing new canvas for the artistic do-it-yourselfer. Whatever we choose to call it, the bare floor is very much in tune with to day's life styles. It's easy to maintain, it's great for the clean, uncluttered look, and it creates an illusion of spaciousness even in relatively small areas. Do-lt-Yourself Parquet Parquet has been con sidered the aristocrat of flooring from the 16th cen tury • to the present. The originals were commissioned by kings and queens as the most suitable flooring for royalty. Intricate geometric ..pa&ejQS were made from individual pieces of wood, with varying graip and color. These in<y,vidual ' plfece!? were then put down, one at a time. Parquet floors in palatial homes, apartments and museums, are still be ing installed piece by piece. The results are spectacular; the cost as tronomical. Excellent results can be achieved at a fraction of the cost by ambitious do-it- yourselfers. Pre-cut tongue' and grooved pieces are a- vailable for those that have the patience for this work. For the less adventurous, a parquet floor can be in stalled quickly and easily. Parquet designs can be pur chased in block form. Each block is made-up of several short lengths of wood, se lected to create a specific design. All the pieces are held together by metal spines or fasteners. The The more expensive have a peel-off back for "instant" installation. Others have no glue backing and must be secured to the floor with mastic. One of the great ad vantages of these parquet blocks is that they can be installed directly over any floor, even concrete. Bringing Now Life 2 to^Old Floors Even the most badly ne glected floor can be made to look as good as new with comparatively little effort. Sanding, which is the first step, is a snap when done I by a machine. These are shaped like an upright vacu um cleaner and can sand an average floor in a few hours. They are available on a rental basis in supermarkets in most cities across the country., Once the sanding is done, the rest is fun and games. The floor is very much like a giant canvas waiting for the painter's masterful strokes. It must be finished with a protective coat of some kind to withstand the spills and ills that floors are heir to. Itoere are a variety of finishes avail able, ranging from pene trating sealers to those tough urethanes and amino- resins developed for factory floors. Since they resist water and scuffs, they are well worth the extra ex pense in heavily trafficked areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, and foyers. Varnish is available In high, semi and low gloss. The disadvantage of varnish is that it will darken slight ly with age. It is also dif ficult to retouch without leaving a patched appear- ance. Shellac was once the most popular finish because it dries quickly but since it tends to show spots from liquid spills it is now being used less and less. Lacquer Renewed Sell-Esteem Aids Older Persons Thanks to the efforts of 73-year-old Tony Lamb, oldej: persons in Ventura County, California, have their own televised classes designed to assist them in dealing with their myriad problems. The first effort of its kind in California, the weekly program offers pointers on federal and state retirement income as well as other forms of government assist ance available to older per sons. "My feeling is that there is a lot of government aid available," Lamb told a writer from The National Council on the Aging. "The problem is that older people don't know how to go about getting it. They have to be educated." Lamb, who is the Ven tura County Senior Citizens Advisor, first taught classes four years ago in the class rooms of two local colleges. Along the way, he has trained over 100 tutors who work throughout the county educating older people and helping them through the maze of the bureaucracy. is excellent although it takes considerable skill to apply because it dries so quickly. Remember there's no law that says a hardwood floor must be stained „ in its natural color. Color can be added to any of the finishing solutions. (NP Features) by Gerry Johnson "It's not fair to blame the government for all the prob lems older persons have," Lamb said. "There's a lot of assistance available if sen iors just know how to get it. I'd estimate that only about half the older people in Ventura County can un scramble government jargon on their own and about 30 percent only have an ele mentary school education." After retiring from a ca reer as an engineer, Lamb, a widower, got interested in the problems of older peo ple and ways in which they can be solved. "All you have to do is see one or two people in need of homemaker assistance who don't know that such a service is available or are intimidated by governmen tal procedures," Lamb said. "That's enough to make anyone want to give them a hand.'; Besides his television classes, Lamb has two early morning shows on local ra dio stations and is responsi ble for a number of pro grams aiding senior citizens, including the survival men bile, which offers free trans portation to medical ap pointments, grocery shop ping and other places. He has, also established an emergency cash fund which can provide instant funds in times of crisis and a hotline for seniors that operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day. "What I tell older people-- and it's certajnly true -- is that they've contributed a great deal to,the country and have helped make it the great place it is. When older people realize their worth it becomes much easier for them to take their rightful place in society. If I could get that message across to every senior citizen in the country, half the battle would be over." SEATTLE RECENTLY joined the ranks of major cities eliminating mandatory retirement for municipal employees when Mayor Wes Uhlman signed an executive order abolishing what he called ."arbitrary age dis crimination against older Americans." The executive order, which will affect about 175 city workers this year, will not apply to policemen and firemen, who must retire at an age set by state law. Uhlman's action follows closely similar legislation enacted in Los . Angeles which abolishes mandatory retirement for city workers with the provision that they take an annual physical ex amination. No physical will be required for Seattle em ployees. Mayor Uhlman said man datory retirement denies persons "the opportunity to continue to live productive lives and also robbed the city of a much valued re source--the experience and talents of older citizens." ] FUNNYS1DE r,Lc-Hcx^K "Watt just a minute.
