Servicing will be from ll:3t a.m. to 2:3® p.m. STAFF PHOTOS-WAYNE GAYLORD Excellence Accredited At Memorial Hospital Memorial hospital for McHenry county has been accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals for another two- year period, Bert Hanson, executive director, announced today. This accreditation covers from 1977 to 1979 and is the result of an on-site survey made by field representatives of the Joint Commission's Hospi ta l Accredi ta t ion program. Mr. Hanson explained accreditation means Manorial hospital has chosen to operate according to standards set by the Joint commission on Accreditation of Hospitals and that the facility meets these standards. The standards establish optimal achievable goals of excellence against which a facility can measure itself and be measured by the Joint Commission's survey. Mr. Hanson said Memorial hospital is one of 4,800 general hospitals in the United States that have earned the accreditation recognition. There are about 7,150 hospitals in the U.S. altogether. The Joint commission's accreditation surveys are voluntary. It is not legally necessary for a hospital to be accredited, but health care facilities have sought accreditation because it represents a benchmark of quality that is higher than governmental licensure alone. Hie chief aim of the hospital accreditation program, one of four such programs under the JCAH umbrella, is to help hospitals in their pursuit of excellence and thereby provide a higher quality of care to patients. The program also seeks to recognize, and to identify for the public, those facilities which meet its standards, stressed Mr. Hanson. The Joint commission began in 1918 under the auspices of the American College of Surgeons. It was incorporated in 1951 with the support of its present member organizations; The American College of surgeons, the American College of Physicians, the American Hospital Association, and the American Medical Association. JCAH is a Chicago-based, non­ governmental, not-for-profit organization. In addition to hospitals, it has programs for the accreditation of long-term care facilities, psychiatric facilities, facilities for mentally retarded and other developmentally disabled persons, and ambulatory health care. Each of the more than half million 4-H volunteer leaders contributes an estimated 20 8- hour days annually to 4-H leadership responsibilities. 4-H. the youth education program of the Cooperative Extension Service, emphasizes learn-by-doing projects and activities that build character and develop leadership- citizenship skills.
