ILL. 385-1040 Paul Olsen Wishes For Magic Robot "I wish I had a magic robot to help me do good in the world," said Paul Olsen thoughtfully. "Zap! There's a million gallons of gas, clean air, fresh water, and no more wars. We'd make inventions only for good." And somewhere, soon this . imaginative, soft-spoken fourteen-year-old wishes there would be a family-foster or adoptive-just for him. Paul has few memories of family life according to his caseworker at the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. He and his five brothers and sisters were deserted by their father when Paul was four; their mother disappeared two years later. Families were found for the other children, but because Paul had some emotional and learning problems, he was placed in a children's home. Since then Paul has had several hospital and institutional placements-more than he cares to count. He feels that "getting moved around so much wasn't fair" and really wants to know "when will you find me a family too?" "It should be a family that's good, has brothers and sisters, and does things kids like to do." And they should go to church regularly. That's important to Paul. So important, he explained, that "If I don't get to go every week, I just pray longer at night." Blonde, with blue-green eyes and a ruddy complexion, Paul thrives in a wide-open, easy­ going country atmosphere -- a farm or a ranch. He's not afraid to work hard-- especially when there's a reward attached. This past summer he groomed horses in exchange for free riding privileges and loved it. "Someday I'd like to have my own racing or jumping horse," he said. "Don't know yet what I'll call it" Also "someday," Paul plans to be a mechanic or car designer. These are good^ choices because he has a knack for repairing or building things like motorbikes, tractors, and stereo sets. Though confident about doing intricate mechanical projects, Paul has been slow to master basic school skills, particularly reading and writing. He has some problems remembering things and must be patiently " w a l k e d t h r o u g h ' ' assignments. But his attitude toward school is a good one: "the more I get, the more I learn, and I do want to learn." One school area in which Paul excels is sports. He has a dresser full of trophies and ribbons for football, baseball, archery, swimming, and trampoline. He also enjoys water skiing, roller skating and "just being outside." Paul needs an easy-going, mature foster family willing to understand his academic limitations and patient enough to work with him. The 'family may have to take an extra step or two to show Paul what family life is all about. At the same time, though, they'll find this friendly youngster eager to belong and to share love.
