Illinois 60014 • (SIS) 459-2641 by Estello Atwoll That simffle old household custom - it's time to let the cat out - has brought a bitter harvest of anguish and tragedy immense in proportion. This season McHenry county is literally glutted with cats and kittens. Cat owners want to dispose of them and there's no place for the precious bits of feline life to be sheltered and protected Life is a precious gift, no less to the cat or kitten than to a person. In McHenry county tax monies are allocated only for dogs; none are set aside for cats. When the Animal Control gets a call to pick up cats they must charge a fee. They are hot obligated to pick them up but have a humane interest in cooperating. However, with very few cases available for cats and no space for more, there is no choice but to give them fatal injections. At no time since the in corporation of Helping Paws, some 7 years ago, have they been so frustrated in finding homes for cats and kittens. And, HP can add no more to the list until homes are found for those already on it. What can be done about the problem? Since it's people who caused it and cats and dogs are just the innocent victims, it's people who must help solve it. On Oct. 4 there was a Crystal Lake City Council meeting. Mary Nenon, vice president of Helping Paws, and Jack Rehorst, director of the Animal THE GUTS THAT BUT BMW- MA BOOT THAT MADE ROAD TEST SAIT/IT IS MFFKUV TO IMAGINE A BETTER FAMKf SEDAN." Revenues from such an ordinance would be allocated to humane attention for cats. However, it never got off the ground. Crystal Lake is not under Home Rule; therefore they cannot adopt ordinances unless they are state or county laws. And the county has no such law. The next step then is to urge the county board to pass such a law. Write your county representatives and ask them to support the ordinance to register and license cats. Start petiiton8 in your neighborhood urging your county representatives to pass the cat ordinance. Please address your plea to the Chairman of the County Board, Richard O. Klemm, 2200 N. §e!nii Woodstock, 111. 60098 Among communities already alerted to the problem who have adopted effective legislation to license cats are Clarendon Hills, St. Charles, and Evanston, where it is mandatory upon cat owners to pay a fee and register and license their feline pets.
