C- NO PLACE TO GO...This picture to indicative of the entire game Friday night as Zion-Benton's defense through a blanket over the McHenry offense, the Zee-Bees winning 104. Here, Marty Deener to grabbed at the line of scrimmage by a Z-B defender. Although Deener gained just 41 yards in 16 carries Friday, he was far and away the leading Warrior ball carrier. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Marian Stumbles Again •w *& C A new problem surfaced for Marian Central Saturday as the Hurricanes were losing to Driscoll 27-13. Turnovers. Hiere were seven of them for Marian Saturday, two of them leading directly to Driscoll scores, and the others helping keep the Hurricanes in miserable field position. Couple the mistakes with the passing wizardry of Highlander quarterback Joe Guzman, and it added up to an easy win for Driscoll, which is 6-0 on the season, 4-0 in the West Suburban Catholic conference. Marian is now 1-5 overall, 1-3 in the WSCC, and has lost its last two. The Hurricanes were never really in Saturday's game after John Pinakidis caught a 51-yard touchdown pass from Guzman on Driscoll's third play from scrimmage. Driscoll moved ahead 13-0 midway through the second quarter, driving 44 yards after an interception, before Marian tallied on its best sustained march of the season. The Hurricanes took the kickoff following the second Driscoll scored and moved 71 yards in 11 plays, with the score being set up on a perfectly executed halfback option pass from Ed Sandall to Kurt Parker. Trailing 13-6 at the half, the Hurricanes then turned the ball over to Driscoll on the Marian 21-yard line. From there, it took eight plays to boost the Highlander lead to 19-6. Driscoll added an insurance touchdown late in the fourth quarter before Marian tallied a consolation touchdown on a 66-yard pass from reserve quarterback Bill Banker to Parker. Better news was forthcoming from the sophomore game, where Marian blanked Driscoll 16-0. What has become a depressing habit continued Friday night, when Zion-Benton sent the large homecoming crowd home unhappy, toppling the Warriors 104). The loss was the fourth in a row for McHenry, its fifth loss in six games, and ; extended the streak of scoreless quartets to , eight. The loss can be blamed on an offensive unit which netted just 92 yards in total offense. Quarterback Pete Prust, who had to run for his life mi almost every pass play, was sacked twice and threw three interceptions. On only two occasions did a McHenry play net more than seven yards, with one of the two, a 29-yard pass from Prust to Mike Williams, providing most of the offensive excitement. The Warriors also faltered when called upon to receive Zion-Benton punts. Twice, McHenry fumbled punts, with one leading to thp Hinchine field goal. The two bright spots for McHenry were the punting of Mike Tollifson and the play of the entire defensive unit, which thwarted Zion- Benton at every turn. The only exception was a 37-yard scoring pass from Joe Bowles to Carl Anderson. The scoring play was set up when an attempted screen pass by Prust bounced off the receiver's hands and was intercepted. Except for the ten points given up after the interception and fumbled punt, the McHenry PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALF.R . WEDNESDAY. Something must be done about that. Theyalsokeep their slim hold onto first place, but there are 9 other teams ready to do battle and win. W. Farrell (192) and M. Holm (218) rolled the men's high game and M. Holm (514) shared high series with R. Justen. B. Thompson (169 and 494) and K. Lescher -would you believe- (165 and 434) took the prize for the women. Only one split was picked up and L. Johnson did it with the 5-10. Congratulations to G. Lofgrin and M. Kangas for raising their averages by more pins than anyone else.
