| Sweet Swing h Of Success Two of the McHenry golfers who were instrumental in leading their team to Springfield for the state finals this weekend are Tim Byers and Tom Pepping. Tuesday, over the highly rated course at Lake Bluff, Pepping shot a 76 and Byers 77, to go along with Jim Buenzli's 73. Those three low scores helped offset the fact that McHenry had to count an 87 in its team score of 313. Pepping shot his 76 despite taking a quadruple bogey 8 on the first hole he played. Byers shot his 77 despite going out of bounds on one hole. None of them look anything like their namesakes. Yet they all have things in common. One is that they are famous eaters, with lots of teeth. Frogfish, for example, have rows of conical-shaped teeth which begin at the jaws and extend back into the mouth, in cluding teeth on the tongue. They are voracious predators and will eat almost anything small enough to get into their mouths. Fortunately, frogfish don't grow larger than six inches long. A goosefish is a different story. It has a large, flat head with an enormous toothfilled mouth, and grows to weigh 50 pounds. Its favorite foods include most other species of fish, all kinds of sea birds, plus lobsters and crabs for dessert. While freshwater anglers will never see these odd fish species, the fishing department at Mercury outboards says that saltwater anglers are likely to catch all three since they do live in coastal waters. Goosefish range from New foundland south, while batfish and frogfish are found in tropical waters of both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Perhaps the strangest of the trio is the batfish. Seldom more than 12 inches long, it has a cellence in the various com petitions during the season. The club meets at the American Legion home on Ringwood road. The meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month, with a starting time of 8 p.m. Anyone interested in joining the club may attend. D. C. -- Joe Garagiola has voiced a solid thought. He complains that when a pitched ball strikes a batter's bat acciden tally, even if it's over the batter's head, it's automatical ly a strike. Joe is right. The rule should be changed-so that umpires call the pitch as they see it. Also absurd are several other baseball rules. Sports writers and umpires could, if a committee were formed, bring common sense to bear and improve them. Pitchers need better meas urement. Often fine, sustained performances go unrewarded and a reliefer who comes in for an out or two becomes the winner--via today's rules.
