"Your recent letter in the McHenry Plaindealer, relative to the "No" vote for the referendum for McHenry high school was read with interest, and with great respect for your loyalty to your school. It was written from your point Of view - and I would like to add mine! "Your average age is about from 14 years to 18 years, and for the greater part of your life, you have received all the things you needed, food, home, schooling, love from your parents. In addition to what you received yourselves, the folks of McHenry, through their yearly taxes, have contributed continually to our schools....when we did and when we did not have pupils enrolled. Education means many things - and you are most fortunate to be able to have available to you the many extra advantages of modern day systems of teaching...however, these extra benefits do not guarantee turning out good women and men who can continue in our steps and even improve our country and our way of living. "Many of you have worked some during your school years, babysitting, grass cutting, paper routes, supermarkets, etc., and in spending your own money for those extra things you like to have you have discovered that everything has almost gone out-of-sight in price. This same situation exists with all the costs of keeping up a home, feeding and educating children...and the most difficult part is that it never seems to end. Every parent loves his children and the best for them, is almost im- ieve the goal had in mind. "If you will look around your school, you will find many new and extra teaching aids, they cost a great deal, and while they no doubt accomplish their spot in life, a good education could be had without them. Considering the great demand for curtailment of natural resources, much of these should, or could be, tem porarily set aside. True, there are many departments that of necessity demand constant replacements, etc., chemistry lab, library, gym equipment, and teachers are continually receiving higher salaries. But what can we do about these things? "The other day I spoke on the telephone with a teacher who had taught the eight grades in a "Prairie school" in our area. About all their equipment consisted of was benches, desks, a pot-belly stove for heat, and their books. We have come far since then, but maybe we should look back and compare the end results of those who have lived, earned a living and paid their way in such days and what we ac complish today. They actually settled this area and brought out the benefits which you have today! "Maybe if all of you put your heads together and got a real good look at what 'education' actually means - without all the extra frills we seem to feel are A-l HEARING AID REPAIR SERVHX.
