X PAGE 20 - PLAINDEALER -FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18. 1977 Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 17, 1927) William Schumacher was taken to the Joliet penitentiary at Joliet on Wednesday by Sheriff Sanford, sentenced to serve from one to fourteen years. The man who shot his father on Oct. 2D begins serving his sentence in less than one month following the crime. Burglars entered the office of the McHenry Lumber company last Friday night and knocked the combination from the safe with a hammer, rifling > the contents of the cash drawer, but they were not very well repaid for their efforts, there being but a small sum of money on hand. Several checks were also taken. The company was fully covered by burglarly insurance. Notwithstanding the fact that the season is getting late, McHenry is undergoing con siderable building activity ranging from store buildings in the business section to the bungalow and the home buildings in the residential district. The last football game of the season was played Saturday t when the local team journeyed to Harvard where they were defeated by a score of 64 to 0. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 18, 1937) The McHenry County Far mers Cooperative association continues to make progress. The firm now announces the purchase of adjoining property from Mrs. J. Scott Matthews, acquiring about 170 feet of track frontage along the Chicago k Northwestern railway. The new owners plan to improve the property and use the building, formerly occupied as a pickle factory, for storage purposes. The continued progress of the association is a fine tribute to both the president and manager, John A. Bolger, and the board of directors of this fine organization. There was little study at the Ostend school house Monday when the teachers and pupils discovered that school books which were valued ht $150 and a wall clock had been stolen. Burglars broke into the school house sometime during the weekend and stole the books.' The first and only hunting fatality in this area since the season opened occurred Saturday morning when Byron Po, 25, a former resident of McHenry, was accidentally shot and killed by a com panion's gun while hunting in Bull Valley. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Coleman were in attendance at a reunion held in Gary, Ind., last BEFORE YOU BUY. Saturday night at which time Mr. Coleman met about seventy-five ex-soldiers, who enlisted at Gary in December, 1917, for service in the world war. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of November 27, 1952) Something new in the way of open houses will be held in McHenry on Friday evening, Dec. 5, when city and rural residents served by the McHenry post office are invited to visit the office and see the "behind the scenes" work of the postal department. Patrons are urged to bring in letters or cards so that they may see the stamping process, along with the many other features of this extensive service. The purpose of the special evening is two fold, first, to give the public an idea just how detailed the mail service is, and second, to en courage people to mail early during the holiday rush period. The best attended and probably for many other reasons the most successful Kiwanis-sponsored football banquet, was held last Thur sday evening, in the high school cafeteria. Ray Huizinga, tackle on the Northwestern football team, presented Tom Huemann with the beautiful Kiwanis club trophy for having been selected by his teammates as most valuable member of the 1952 football team. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 24, 1967) Dr. Peter Griesbach of McHenry was elected president of the McHenry County Medical society at the annual election meeting held Nov. 16. The Rev. Gerald L. Robert son has assumed the respon sibilities as pastor of the Alliance Bible church at 3813 W. John street. He becomes the first full time pastor to minister in the church. At the City Council meeting City Attorney John Looze ex plained a mixup in titles and usage of the city's property at the site of the city hall and adjoining property of School District 15, the site of Land mark school. An old map and a record in the city minutes of the year 1925 showed a cooperative attempt at that time to clear the boundary lines. Currant surveys indicate that each owner is using property belonging to the other. Proposed expansion of the city hall and the possible sale of the school property indicated to the Council that a meeting with the school board take place in the near future to clarify the problem. Marvin Birshfield of Crystal Lake, bonding consultant of School District 156, McHenry, was present at Tuesday evening's meeting to read a resolution calling for the $550,000 ecessary to complete the new high school now under construction on the Crystal Lake blacktop. Voting will take place Saturday, Dec. 16. i joooeaooooooonocBQooooo McHenry Highlights ALEXANDER LUMBER CO.
