Politically, both he and President Carter seemed to get what they were after. For Iran, it's the arms they want to buy (despite Mr. C a r t e r ' s n e c e s s a r y disclaimers); for the U.S., the Shah's active cooperation to keep OPEC oil prices from rising next years. While conditions in Iran continue not to satisfy the human rights idealists who demand nothing less than perfection-on-earth, the lot of the average Iranian has im­ proved markedly as the Shah has accelerated his nation's industrialization. Some say it is coming too fast, resulting in inefficiencies and duplication of effort. Even so, the per capita income is rising and, politically, persons detained are declining in number. The Shah insists that those still locked up are Marxist revolutionaries. Considering past history and the fact that Iran is a staunch American ally right on the Soviet border, it is un­ derstandable that the Shah is skeptical about the motivations of his government's opponents. *How Many?' That extends to the Paper Bag People in the U.S. last week, too. On seeing them massed in Williamsburg, Va. to shout and holler at him, he remarked "I wonder just how many people behind those masks are Iranians?" His skepticism did not extend to most U.S. news media. The Paper Bag People (they had cut eye and mouth holes and put the bags over their heads, they said, to avoid iden­ tification and reprisals by the Shah's secret police) got heavy- on-camera coverage well before the Shah arrived in Washington. They staged a "fast" on the steps of the Capitol. One man, about 30, identified himself as head of the Iranian Students organization and said that all the Paper Bag People were Iranian students protesting the corrupt, fascist, repressive, U.S.-puppet government of the Shah. (If that's not an exact quote, it's close enough. The rhetoric was straight out of the campusiiots of the 1960s, only the object of scorn had changed). 'Iranian Students' In four days of steady coverage by the media, I found that television, radio, the wire services and the Washington n e w s p a p e r s r o u t i n e l y described the Paper Bag People as "Iranian students". One news report said that the crowd of anti-Shah and pro- Shah protestors massed near the White House numbered 8,000, about evenly divided. Can there be 4,000 Iranian students in the United States and, if so, can they all be apoplectic over their nation's government? You might think skeptical reporters would want to look into that and at least consider the possibility that some of those people wore paper bags because they had been in so many rallies for so many causes they might be accused of being hired from Rent-a-Rioter. The pro-Shah demonstrators were not accorded the same proforma acceptance as the Paper Bag People. CBS Morning News, on Tuesday, Nov. 15, for example, did an extensive story questioning the source of funds for pro-Shah ads placed in newspapers by various ad hoc committees, strongly implying that the ad money and the transportation for the pro-Shah demonstrators to come to Washington was We welcome. Jan. 1, and Jan. 2 being utilized as a holiday, the board of Johnsburg School District 12, at the last scheduled meeeting, acted to revise the calendar. There will not be school Jan.2 but instead there will be school March 27. The most important reason for having school Monday, March 27, is that McHenry high school will conduct classes that day and it is a normal work day for most workers.
