Many families, however, have somewhat grimmer Hol­ iday memories -- brought on by just one unsafe act which caused a needless, tragic accident. To help you have a safe Holiday Season with good pleasant memories, Under­ writers Laboratories Inc. (UL) -- a not-for-profit organiza­ tion testing for public safety -- offers the following tips. * Purchase only UL listed light strings. For outdoor use, only weather proof cords and lighting should be used. The UL Label will indicate light strings suitable for outdoor US6. * Cheek all lights care­ fully. Make certain bulbs are not loose in their sockets. Use rubber light socket gas­ kets, and replace if needed. * Selection of a tree, whether natural or artificial is a crucial matter. Artificial trees should be labeled flame resistant. Never put light string* on a metal tree -- this Is a shock hazard -- use only spot lighting. Natural trees should be fresh -- deep green, strong scent, no falling needles and trunk butt sticky with sap. Keep trunk in water, and check it daily. * Inspect all wiring. Watch for insulation deterioration, frayed and bare wires, lights with broken or cracked sock­ ets, or loose connections. Unsafe equipment should be discarded immediately. • Watch placement of electrical fixtures. Keep them out of childrenli reach, and never place them dote to flammable material. * Never overload circuits. By placing more current on a wire than it was Intended to carry, overheating and fire can result. Look for the capacity of the wire tad fol­ low manufacturer's suggested * Always turn off decora­ tive lights when leaving home or retiring. Short circuits and fires can result. These leaders were presented with a special pin for their leadership to the 4-H program. V LEADERS The key to success of . 4-H lies in the hundreds of thousands of volunteers wt)o lead organized clubs and special interest fpoups In McHenry county there are 200 men and women working with youth through the 4-H program. At times they have what may seem to be a thankless job. But they are helping to make the youth of today better future citizens. Leaders for 10,15,20 and 25 years of service received recognition for their loi« time efforts with a special leadership pin at the annual 4-H leaders and members recognition banquet. They are: Nancy Vogts, 10-year leader of the Better Goals; George Madden, 10-year leader of the Busy Three; Lorraine Luth, 10 years with Dunham B Sharps; Libby Aavang, 10 years with Greenwood Handi- Helpers; Marian Lang, 10 years with Lucky- Ettes; Mrs. Burley Linhart, 10 years with Harvard A'Tems; Jeanette Everett, 10 years of leadership in the Dog Care and Training; Mr. and Mrs. Russell Wright, 15 years of service with Cherry Valley; Ernest Marzahl, 20 years of leadership to the Hebron Helping Hands; Ken Markussen, 25 years of service to the Busy Beavers. All 4-H Leaders during the 1976-77 4-H year are invited. 4-H members must be county or state outstanding members or the recipient of a county medal to receive an invitation to the banquet. YOUTH One hundred and twenty 4-H members received special recognition at the recent 4-H members award and 4-H leaders recognition banquet heki at Richmond. The youth were recognized for achievements in individual 4-H projects and activities and in overall achievement. All awards are sponsored by national or state donors. The banquet was funded through local contributors and the new McHenry County 4-H foundation. The I Dare You Book award was given to eight youth this year. Presented by the Danforth foundation of St. Louis, Mo., the book challenges the youth to strive for high ideals in-their lives. Recipients are chosen on the basis of mi fourfold development in leadership, scholarship, physical fitness and religious service. Recipients are Lynn Simmons and Michele Sarko, Marengo; Fay Stroh, Nikki Payne, Jack Hardt and Don Swanson, Woodstock; Karen Kuhlman, Hebron; and Shelly VonBruenchenhein, McHenry. The Illinois 4-H Key award was given to two youths this year, Steve Thompson, Greenwood, and Karen Kuhlman, H&ron. The award presented by Farmland Industries of Kansas City, Mo., is given*) youth 14 and older who have shoi|£r outstanding contributions to 4-H, their community, church and school. Other special awards presented were a $100 Savings bond by the Illinois Health Improvement association to Joy Vyduna, McHenry. Joy has received this and other awards for her achievements in the health activity.
