Facts From McHenry Community High School In the past two years Ski club has grown into the largest McHenry high school co- curricular activity. Two years ago fifty to fifty-five students participated weekly, where now the club includes as many as 350 students. Wilmot was the first outing for this year's club members, with 120 students out on the slopes testing their skills. Weekly ski outings during the winter months include trips to such areas as Majestic, Alpine, and Playboy ski areas. In February, a weekend ski outing is scheduled. At that time, students and Ski club sponsors will travel to Devil's Head in Merrimac, Wis. Participation comes from freshmen through seniors with students handling much of the book work. Record keeping and collecting of fees & handled by students in both buildings. Student leaders are assigned to each bus to help in supervising. Sue Ludwig, senior at West campus, is presently president of the club. Ski club originated at East campus about five years ago. Presently there are three sponsors: Paul Buckley and Roger Knauer at East campus with Jim Neils coordinating the effort^ of the club at West campus. Ski instruction is given both to new skiers and more ex perienced skiers. A goal for the future is to involve members in more activities out of ski season. Six million Americans suffer from asthma, according to the D u P a g e - M c H e n r v L u n g association in Woodstock, and, for some of them, exercise can trigger asthma attacks. Now, new evidence suggests that exercising in cold weather may increase the severity of the attacks. According to the Lung association, asthma can be caused by a variety of agents. Fairly hard running seems to be the most attack-causing exercise - for the first two to four minutes of exercise, the air passages of the lungs ex pand, then drastically contract. Surprisingly, the most severe part of the attacks usually comes after the exercise is stopped. Dr. August Rossetti, McHenry, chairman of the Lung association's medical advisory committee, cites a new research study published in the New England Journal of SECTION f 3 - PI AINDFA1.F.R - FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1977 asthmatics avoid harmful situations. "For example," Dr. Rossetti said, "swimming is a strenuous exercise that seldom causes attacks in asthmatics." "Contributions to Christmas Seals support the fight against asthma, emphysema, TB and air pollution," Dr. Rossetti added, "and we urge residents to answer their Christmas Seal letter today."
