Unti, early Sunday morning. The house, which is located in the rear of the McHenry ice cream factory, is somewhat obscured from a view of the street and it was not until a lively blaze had started that the fire was discovered. The alarm was immediately turned in and in a short time the firemen with the new fire truck were on the job and soon had the blaze ex tinguished, but not before the Mount Hope United Methodist Church 1015 W. Broadway, Pistakee Highlands Sunday Worship: 11 A.M. - Sunday School 9:45 A.M. roof and inner walls were burned. This was the first occasion necessitating the use of the new fire truck which worked most satisfactorily, forcing the water from the big hose several feet above the burning building. Martin May, Mike Baur, John Miller, Joe J. Freund and Mat Schmitt of the McHenry Township Mutual Fire In surance company attended the annual meeting held at Hebron Dec. 6. Mat N. Schmitt was reelected secretary for the coming year. The letters received by the parents of the three McHenry boys who are attending college FREE ESTIMATES! The boys who are attending college are Albert and William Vales and Anthony Schneider. On Thanksgiving day, William Vales played the organ for the high Mass. In addition to their orchestra, the Melody Masters, the boys have now formed a quartette with Albert Vales singing first bass, William Vales second bass, Anthony Schneider first tenor and George Ziegler second tenor. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 9, 1937) Many problems of significance came before the City Council Monday evening as its members convened for the regular December meeting. Careful study of the tavern business and the ordinance regulating the sale of alcoholic liquor resulted in the adoption of a resolution which will not allow a greater number of taverns in the city than are operating at the present time. McHenry now has seventeen class A tavern licenses issued to the thirtieth day of April, 1938. Upon approval of ap plications and bonds, the present licenses can be renewed next spring. The council members wish to make it clear that they do not want to work a hardship on those now in the tavern business, nor do they wish to affect landlords who now have buildings rented for tavern occupancy. The idea in mind is that the number of taverns per capita of populations in McHenry greatly exceeds the normal percentage. William R. Skimore, owner of the Pine Tree Dairy farms at McHenry, added to the string of grand championships at the International Livestock ex position in Chicago when he was awarded grand cham pionships, junior, senior and reserve championships on his Percheron and Suffolk horses exhibited, in addition to many other prizes. It was stated by experts at the show that no single stable in twenty years had won as many honors as had Mr. Skidmore this year on his fine horses at the Pine Tree Dairy farms. The local manager of the Illinois Bell Telephone com pany in this district, George Wilburn, with two assistants, showed sound pictures revealing the origin and development of the modern telephone systems at the regular meeting of the local Lions club at the Bickler hotel. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 18, 1952) The City Council voted, at regular meeting Monday night, to approve the annexation of Edgebrook Heights subdivision to the city of McHenry. Con trary to general belief, citfes do not reach out a fid take territory into their corporate limits. In the case of this new addit' petition was filed in the court which was signed percent of the owners of of land in the territory ai by 100 percent of the el„_ residing in the territory.. This new subdivision promu a fine addition to the city. part of the Stephen farm, south of McHenry, an ideal site for new he A long awaited remc of the former Tesch dwel _ for library purposes is under way. At a recent meeting ot the Library board, it was repotUfd that response to appeals *for help from various tradesmen was not as expected. Sometiad dorte more than their part, but the need for carpenters sfiil existed. In an effort to get things moving, Mayor Freund rolled up his sleeves and started taking out partitions. Promises of help soon followed and it now appears that the work will be completed in short order. 'nm The Warriors lost another basketball game at Zion- Benton last Friday night anjd the pattern was much the same as seen before. This loss was by a 64 to 50 score. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files, of December 15, 1967) wG The county meeting of the board of supervisors *>n Tuesday was markedQtiy controversy on at least two important subjects. One of them was in reference to the selection of autoniatic voting machines for the county, with the vote resulting in a 15 to 9 decision for the IBM Votomatic Voting Recorders. The other controversy centered on securing money immediately for the county mental health needs and resulted in the resignations from the Mental Health board of Supervisor William A. Ward, president; Arnold May of Richmond ,and Charles Stone of Woodstock. The walk-outs of Ward and Stone came following the morning session, when the Finance committee of the board requested an extension until January in the release of funds for the mental health program. Four persons attended the regular meeting of the board of School District 15 earlier this week in the interest of securing additional information on the proposed purchase of a site for a new school. The public wijl be asked to express an opinion on a new school site near the junction of Ringwood road and State highway 120. The sites mentioned to the board were Telegraph, Glosson farm and Lakeland Shores properties. Milk Producers Of Local Region In Annual Meet The annual meeting of the Northeastern Illinois district (17-B) of Associated Milk Producers, Inc., will be held Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Sorrento's Ranch, four miles west of the intersection of Hwys. 47 and 64 on Hwy. 64. Lawrence A. Johnson, Hebron, district president, said the meeting will begin with an 11:30 a.m. dinner, followed by the business session. Paul Affeldt, Sparta, Wis., Mid-States region president, will be the main speaker at the meeting. Members of the district will elect delegates to represent them at the combined regional and corporate annual meetings of the cooperative next April in Minneapolis. There will also be an election of district officers. District 17-B includes the northeastern portion of Illinois. This is one of more than eighty meetings to be held through mid-December in the Mid-States region of AMPI.
