CWS, the international development and relief arm of the National Council of Churches, will ship 10,000 metric tons of wheat to Viet- £ nam by February. * CWS Executive Director e Paul F. McCleary said this will £ be the first food shipment £ directly from the U.S. to " Vietnam since the war, and the largest shipment in the ten- year history of CWS develop ment assitance to Vietnam. Because of the U.S. govern ment trade embargo against V i e t n a m , d e n y i n g humanitarian aid as well, CWS must receive special per mission for the shipment. In any case, the agency will not be able to count on Government reimbursement for shipping costs, as it does for most other overseas food donations, McCleary noted. n Much of the wheat is ex- : pected to be donated by U.S. farmers through CROP, the t community hunger 4ppeali of CWS. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is projecting a wheat surplus this year of more than a billion bushels. Funds for shipping and purchased wheat are expected to be raised through the thirty- one church bodies that are members of CWX. Community groups and others are also being asked to contribute. In Vietnam, the wheat will be received by the VIETMY (Vietnamese Committee for Friendship and Solidarity with the American People). The grain will be milled for bread and noodles and distributed primarily to schools and hospitals. \ The special CWS appeal is part of a worldwide effort to meet Vietnam's grain shortfall, which the UN estimates will reach 1,2 million tons by the end of 1977. International aid and Vietnam's imports, ac-*' cording to the.UN, will account for only 800,000 tons. The current shortfall, which represents the subsistence diet of 7.2 million people for a year, has resulted mainly from the worst droughts and floods in that country for more than thirty years, McCleary reported. He added that the food problem has worsened due to the cutoff of assistance from nations that traditionally aided Vietnam, such as the U.S. and China. The continuing effects of the war's devastation have also contributed to the food emergency, he said. According' to McCleary, who visited Vietnam last May with two other CWS representatives, one third of Vietnam's arable land was abandoned during the war, and a sizeable percentage damaged by defoliation and bombing. -V 1977-78 Winter Sport. The club is made up of interested parents and fans, who are trying to promote high school athletics. It is not an organization just for the boys, but the girls are also in line for some fine support The club has already been at work, handling the concessions at wrestling matches, and providing coffee and rolls at the Saturday morning freshmen games. The purpose of the Booster dub, is to generate some spirit and to aid the athletic program in a financial way. It is by no means a gripe session, but a get together of coaches and interested people in the athletic program. Meetings are held the first Thursday of the month at 7:30 at West campus. Anyone 18 years and older is most welcome to join the club. I have been associated with such organizations in the past and have found them most beneficial to the athletic program. Buying of game film, providing money for meals to the athletes after a late night event, sponsoring banquets are among the activities. Like all new clubs, the Boosters need support among the people of the community. At present there are about 100 members, far less than one would expect of a school enrollment of 2400, and a community of several thousand. Remember, McHenry is not the little town of long ago. So set aside Thursday, Jan. 5 and come to the next meeting. The first gala evening for the Booster club is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 21. It is a money making venture to get them under way for the year. On that night at West campus, the faculty will play the Intramural AH Stars in the opening game of the evening. This will be basketball at its best, or the students will hide in shame. Look for the faculty to bring in a ringer to help their cause. Don Bentz has promised to pick an alumni team to meet a mystery team in the feature attraction. Big Don had better pick a good one, as rumors are afloat that the opposition may be too tough to handle. It should be a fun evening, so put down the twenty-first of January as a night out for some good entertainment, along with helping the kids of the community. From all reports, Marty Zeller, a former Warrior, had a fine night last week when his Baylor Bearcats played at Notre Dame. Marty was his team's leading rebounder. and although the Irish won in easy fashion, the local lad picked up 8 points before fouling out. The former Warrior was matched against the 6*11" Dave Batton of the Irish giving up 5 inches in the process. Two other former Warriors are playing at Rock Valley in Rockford. Terry "Radar" Reilly had 22 pts in a losing cause against Lake County the other night Starting at a forward spot is Brian Miller, who scored 12 pts. Tonight the Warriors host the ever improving Crown campus, while Marty Sobczak will take " to Crown.
