DECEMBER 21, 1*7% Twice Told Tales &lUtelMd 5s« Sharon Gacek Anne Moore FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 22, 1927) The feature picture entitled "In the Service of the Queen" was shown to a packed house at the Empire theater on Monday evening. This film was produced by the Midwest Catholic theater movement and William Foeder, Lucille Wolfe and the Joyce Kilmer player^. The unusual feature of the picture was that many of the scences in the first part of the picture were filmed at Pistakee Bay and Johnsburg and the grotto at Johnsburg was beautifully shown. The second part of the story was filed in the romantic southwest in the region of Las Vegas and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Memories of her childhood home were brought more vividly to the mind of Mrs. Ella M. Wheeler this week when she received a Christmas wreath of pine branches which came to her with the fresh, sweet odor of the pine woods direct from AroostOck county, Maine. The basketball team of the Commuhity high school journeyed to Belvidere last Saturday night where they met defeat at the hands of the Belvidere team by a score of 8 to 3. On Dec. 28 the high school team will play the alumni team and on Dec. 30 they will meet the Hebron team at Hebron. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 23, 1937) Although in a world of war and greed, the cry of "Peace On Earth, Good Will Toward Men" will echo across the world on Saturday, Christmas day, when the birthday of the Christ child will be observed and all the Christian world will unite in services. All of the McHenry churches will unite in spirit of Christmas, with ser vices, songs and sermons, while altars, beautiful With flowers and plants, will lend an impressive charm to the ser vices. Despite the hustle and bustle of preparations for Christmas, local residents are taking time to play the part of good fellows to persons less Jortunate than thpmselves. Although there are very few needy families in this community, there are a few who will appreciate a little help at this holiday time and children who will be happy to receive a gift from an unknown Santa Claus. Those green-shirted demons came down from the north again and "done us wrong". It was Tuesday night and Hebron beat us 39 to 36. Playing that same deliberate style of game, reasoning that while you have possession of the ball the other team cannot score, the Hebron boys held an edge in the play throughout most of the game. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December, 27, 1967) In an effort to relieve over crowded branch courts, a new system of cases has been compiled by the magistrates. Traffic cases for Branch III, McHenry, will be held the first and third Wednesdays of the month for the city of McHenry, village of Spring Grove and- village of Island Lake. On the second and fourth Wednesdays cases will be heard for the village of Richmond, village of Sunnyside and village of Mc- Cullom Lake. About $1,500 in fire dam age occurred to the Arthur Hergott home at 2521 W. Johnsburg road, Johnsburg, last Thursday night as the owners fled to safety. Hergott told Fire Chief Ed Justen he had placed his pipe in a smoking stand and retired early. Before falling asleep he heard the family cat playing and detected a noise in the living room. .When awakened by the smell of smoke, he hurried to that room and found the smoking stand tipped over, apparently by the antics of the cat, and the rug was burning. A davenport was destroyed and a hole burned in the floor. The wrestlers got back on the winning track last Tuesday night as they defeated, a sur prisingly tough Cary-Grove team, 22-14. In their last tuneup before the holiday tournament, the Warrior Wrestling power once again evidenced itself with convincing wins at many different levels.
