Cal JrV Cnrrtal Lake, Mrs. Skinner was a campaign aide to the Governor whose responsibilities included photography and graphic design. Mrs. Skinner said the Governor had always encouraged her art work and that she had previously given the Thompsons n drawing of their home in Chicago. The Thompsons' Christmas card message? "Prom Our Home to Yours...Best Wishes for the Holiday Season and a Happy New Year. Jim and Jayne Thompson." Though the work of the Salvation Army is particularly apparent at Christmas time, the organisation's fine programs of self-help and rehabilitation continue on a year-round basis. Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO [Taken from the files of imber 22, 1927) The Christmas season is here &gain and the routine of Everyday life is broken by the plans and preparations which are being made for the biggest and best loved holiday of the year. At this time the spirit of good fellowship and the com munity spirit of good cheer reign supreme and assist in making the observance of Christmas day a most ap propriate one. All kinds of family and. public gatherings are being planned, including special church services. Through the progressiveness of the merchants, the streets of tour city present an unusually -jala and festive appearance year wfttl more attractive rations than have ever used before. A small chimney fire in the iplre theatre called out the ^fcity fire department Thursday -morning. The building suffered -a slight loss as the Maze was soon extinguished. An exciting basketball game is promised those who attend the game Friday evening of this week at the local high school gym, at which time the Elburn Collegians will clash with the McHenry A.A.C. team. FORTY YEARS AGO The McHenry Council Knights of Columbus enjoyed a splendid meeting last Thursday evening in recognition of Jbbarter members, who Organized the council thirty years ago. Covering 8,000 les they visited many points interest in various states and many changes in post and international mail will go into effect Jan. 7, Post master LeRoy Smith reminded postal customers this week. Postmaster Smith pointed out that the new rate for post cards will be five cents and for air mail post cards, eight cents. The seventeen townships in McHenry county will hear the brunt of tax objections this year, according to the analysis of the preliminary settlement made between the state's at torney's office and protestors' attorneys. Of the 9225,000 still in dispute, $110,000 of it are township taxes. If objections are upheld in court, Dunham, Algonquin, Nunda, Dorr and McHenry townships will be the big losers. McHenry stands to lose as much as $11,000. Recent winner of a talent show at Marian Central high school was Pat McAndrews, son of Mr. and Mrs. James McAndrews of 7212 W. Bull Valley road, McHenry. The show was presented by the Mission club. Pat, and ac complished organist, was first place winner in the music division of the annual show. Other participants from the community were Terry Huck and Judy Strorigl, vocal soloists, Gary Guzzardo and Mary Ann Brzezinski, in strumental soloists. Anderson, who lifts a record 6,270 pounds on his back and drives nails through two-by- fours with his palm, maintains homes for forty-five disad vantaged boys in Georgia and' Texas. Anderson became concerned about the plight of homeless and wayward boys after visiting juvenile halls and prisons as an amateur athlete. "I'd always felt God had a special calling for me," he recalls, "and when I came back from the *56 games I just felt something was needed." He began the first home in Vidalia,Ga., where he still lives wth his wife, Glenda, and their lO-year-old daughter, Paula. The Andersons supervise three cottages of boys, with three couples who are house parents. Over 400 youngsters have stayed at the Vidalia home, and many return from college and jobs to visit. A second home was begun in and countryside,-* Lewisville, Tex.; Anderson over mountains and makes hundreds of speeches a year to earn the money needed to support the homes for "his boys." God never gives talents or abilities simply to draw at tention Or glory to their possessors. Each of us has gifts. Some are unusual enough to earn world acclaim. Others are more ordinary. Either way, we can use those talents, as Paul Anderson has, to show love for others. That is a very effective way of returning thanks for God's gifts.
