We're talking about overload pro tection for \electrical supply circuits The electrical circuits sup plying outlets and electrical equipment in houses and apartments are protected against overloads by circuit breakers and/or fuses. These protective devices are of vital importance in safeguarding 'you against electric shocks and your property against fires. Safety engineers at Underwriters Laboratories (UL) advise that they should be handled, maintained and cared for with care and respect, -- with the tender loving care you might give a prized pet or plant. For your protection, UL suggests the following: * Try to find the cause of the blown fuse or circuit breaker "mj> off" (i.e., short circuit or overload), and correct it. * Pull main power switch to "off" to disconnect the electric current before chang ing fuses. Make certain you're standing on a dry surface and your hands are dry too. * Always replace a fuse with a new fuse, UL Listed, of the correct ampere-rating, -- never with a penny, wash er, wad of metal foil or the like. * Turn main power switch to "on" after replacing fuse. If fuse blows again, recheck for cause. If cause can't be located, call a qualified elec trician. * Circuit breakers present few problems. Make certain circuit breakers are UL Listed. If a circuit overload occurs, the breaker "trips off". Mere ly resetting the circuit break er handle to the "on" posi tion re-energizes the circuit. If the breaker insists on "trip ping off", obviously a per manent overload condition is present. Check for over load cause, and if it still "trips off", thte services of a qualified electrician should be obtaineC * If the fuse or circuit breaker protects the circuit to a single device, such as an electric range, central air fOft RENT Enjoy Gracious Suburban living in McHenry, avdilab^ February 1. The "T" rating signifies a time delay characteristic, which avoids the unnecessary nuisance of fuse blowing caused by in rush currents during motor start-up. For long duration overloads, it still gives, the same circuit protection as an equivalent non-"T" rated fuse of the same ampere rating. * For general use, circuits feeding lighting fixtures and appliance outlets, select the lowest ampere-rating fuse -- UL Lasted -- which will serve your needs without nuisance blowing and cir cuit overloading. Start with a fuse rated at 15 amperes -- if this fuse blows during normal, use, select the next size (20 amperes) and pro ceed to a maximum rating of 30 amperes. If the 30 ampere fuse blows, reduce the ratings of the lamps in jthe lighting fixture or dis connect some of the appli ances plugged into the cir cuit. If 30 ampere fuses continue to blow, have the circuit checked out by a qualified electrician. * Always keep extra fuses on hand near the fuse box, and see that a flashlight is handy to see exactly what you are doing.
