"Looking back, I suppose that stems from having al ways liked nice things, es pecially clothes." When she was 20, Sister Edith got a job helping a wealthy German family put on parties. She was paid well and soon learned to mix easily with the famous people who attended the parties. To realize her career am bitions, Sister Edith felt it was important to learn the English language. "She was already ex tremely wealthy back then," Sister Edith recalled, "and very shrewd and frugal."; Although she primarily worked at Rubinstein's home, occasionally SLSter Edith helped mix the facial creams. % - "It was a very elegant es-' tablishment," Sister Eifilh said. "Wealthy, beautiful ladies would come to get their hair and faces done before going to parties. Fart of the attraction was the royal treatment they got," By 1914, Sister Edith was ready to return to Ger many. World War I started though, and she and Rubin stein's cook decided , to come to America. "We thought the par would be over in a matter of months," she said, "and then we'd return hojne. Little did we know!'" When Sister i,;E<iith's brother didn't meet them in New York, the two women weni. to Leo House, a place which helped young Wcfcnen. They were rather upset to find that Leo House was a convent for the Sisters of St. Agnes. Fortunately, it was run like a hotel, and Sister Edith soon got a job as a maid. After locating her brother in Detroit, Sister Edith left Leo House to live with him. "I was trying to decide what to do with my life," she said. "I wanted to help people, and I kept thinking about the convent. Even though I resisted, Leo House had a very strong pu^l." Finally, she returned to the convent and received her diploma in 1920. She was assigned to Kansas, which she didn't care for, and requested a transfer to Fond du Lac, where she was a nurse for 40 years. After additional schooling, she taught nurse's aides un til she was 80, deciding then to step down. For the last eight years she has coordi nated the volunteer candy stripers. "I think about retiring al together occasionally," Sis ter Edith said, then added with a laugh. "So far: I haven't been too success ful." I p Asked about cfraffges *in a nun's life over the years, she agrees that many have occurred, but says, 4>e should not always talk of the past, but should look forward to the future.".. As for her own life as nun, Sister Edith has i o regrets. "I never thought 1 would become a nun, blit war changes many thing: she said. "Besides, even a< youngster I was a bit re gious minded. All in all i s been a good life and I'ie had a lot of fun." Of her life now, Sisftr Edith says, "I'm glad I c n work yet and Use my mir i.
