On The Sidelines % ly Dick Rabbitt Even though the McHenry high school is on a vacation this week, the athletic program is still going full swing. Ken Swanson has his baseball team working out in the gym, along with Dan Boland's track crew, and if you want to see a three ring circus, drop up to West campus some morning. You take your life in your hands when you step into the gym. Between boys running laps, baseball flying through the air, and the shot putters putting the shot, it is a wonder some one doesn't get killed. And when they are finished, up go three tennis nets, and the tennis team takes over the gym. All three coaches are expecting great things this spring. Swanson has a squad of twenty, and they are a hard working group of boys. Dan Boland had a nice surprise when he greeted sixty-eight, a great turnout for track at McHenry. Gary Gray should put a good tennis team on the court this spring. So at this stage of the game it looks as if the Warriors will be representative in all spring activities. It was quite a fun evening talking with the Chicago Bears basketball players in the locker room before and after the game. Tom Hicks, who lives in a high rise near thelake, couldn't get over the distance it was to McHenry. We reminded him that he was in the "Super Boonies", and he remarked he will now believe it. Virgil Livers drove the Kennedy Expressway from the South side, and could not believe that there were that many people driving at that time of night. Bo Rather was telling the other players on meeting new coach Neill Armstrong. Bo said, "that he was easy to talk to, something he could not do with Jack Pardee". Naturally they were all interested, and some of them commented that Jim Finks the general manager was a nice guy, until contract time came around. Gary Fencik talked with some of the coaches, and relived some of his days at Barrington playing against the Warriors. Inquired about Ron Miller, former Warrior. DiorO- nifhoiiph a funnv tmy on the court, is a serious young man, and he and Coach Bill Day had quite a conversation about football. Doug really takes the game seriously and is quite a student of football. Dennis Lick and Jim Osborne are simply huge. They both talk in a soft voice and are very pleasant. They felt that the Bears will be a better team this fall. They were both anxious to meet the new coach. Allen Ellis really likes the game of basketball. He said he wished he was big enough to play professional. The way he jumps he probably could make it. He also remarked after the game about the crowd at West campus. Said it was a very enjoyable crowd, and hoped that they all had a good time. From the line of autograph seekers after the game you know they had a good time. Bob Avellini, the quarterback of the Bears, is a different story. He was just not cooperative in any way. For those who saw him plav that night, his attitude was no different in the locker room. He just seemed bored with the whole thing. We brought a young lad from an area Junior high newspaper to interview him, and the poor young fellow got the same treatment. But all in all they were a great bunch of fellows. They enjoyed coming to McHenry. and I'm sure McHenry was glad that they were here. The head hunting season is on. A good friend Bud Grover of Marian Central, was relieved of his coaching duties the other day. A Marian official has been quoted as saying "A change was necessary for our program". All coaches know it is bound to happen sooner or later, unless of course you have a standout program. I personally thought Bud did a good job considering the size of Marian competing in the West Suburban Catholic league. However, the past several years wins have been too infrequent at the Woodstock school, and the powers to be want a winner. We wish the new coach well; it is a tough job. Grover plans to remain at Marian in a teaching capacity, and will still coach the golf team. Speaking of standout programs, what about Lockport having their varsity, sophomores and freshmen all going undefeated this season, 78 and 0 for 1978. That will be hard to beat in the future. Team representatives and league officers set the schedule for the upcoming season. Boland has taken over the job vacated by Wally Scott who has left the school system. With most of their workouts confined to indoors, it is a little difficult at this time to gauge the prospects for the coming season. However the opener against Wauconda is just a few weeks away, and with good weather we can look for the Warriors to be in shape for the coming season.
