Sometimes this prevention is not pleasant; decisions made in the best interest of an animal may not always be what the public accepts as humane. Everyone probably knows that the sick or badly injured must be euthanized, and humane societies just don't have the money to spend or the facilities to use to help all animals. What the public doesn't know or care is that other healthy, food natured animals must sometimes be euthanized because there are no funds, foster homes, or prospective new owners in sight. So a volunteer must take a sad heartbreaking trip to the veterinarians', and then pay the bill for this most un welcome, unpleasant deed. Public education is another service given free to any and all. Education is com municating the general public the true and tragic .picture of domestic animals. For instance..in a neighboring county, one city alone picks up and impounds 700 dogs per 3-29-6-21TF1 Two to Three year Appaloosa Mares. Broke-needs polishing. 815-338-1918. 5-105-12C month, every month. Of the 700 dogs, 75 percent are destroyed because no owner claimed them, or because no new owners were looking for a dog. in the same county, an animal shelter takes in 300 cats per month, every month, 240 are destroyed for the same reasons. These animals' lives are not considered worthwhile, because too many puppies and kittens are born unwanted and abandoned. Anything, in cluding animals, »that is a flood on the market has a very cheap price tag. The cost to taxpayers in money alone is millions each year, and every year the price goes up. The general public must accept the fact that neutering and spaying are necessities not luxuries. If dogs and cats were a scarce and valuable product people would feel privileged to protect, own and cherish each and every animal. Everyone must be able to face these facts; it is no longer the time to hide ugly, unpleasant facts under the rug to be, ignored and conveniently forgotten. All humane societies, Pet Welfare included, must also try to raise funds continually, to help provide services to the public and the animals. There are no tax monies given to humane societies, no city, state or federal funds are allocated. The money used by humane societies comes from donations by the general public, through fund raising projects, and volunteers donate time and money to help. Of course all donations are tax deductible. The population is urged to help support humane work. New members, foster homes, donations of time or money, an encouraging word are all needed and appreciated. It is frustrating an deman ding work, sometimes heart breaking, and sometimes thankless. But it is very rewarding to know that a good animal has gone to a good, loving home. Not all stories have a happy ending. You, the public can change most of the sad endings. Let our local humane society help you and your pets. Urge Self Analysis During Hospital Week National Hospital week is a good reminder for all people to undergo some self analysis to see what lifestyles are unhealthy, Mrs. Jean Smith, chairman of the Memorial Hospital for McHenry County public relations committee, suggested this week. Observance of National Hospital week now~May 7-13-- "may, not be considered a holiday people ordinarily celebrate but it could be con sidered "something special" for those who have turned to the hospital and been served by the concerned staff members. The National Hospital week observance is a reminder of something people may take for granted in McHenry county- the presence of a local hospital twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, with an emergency room fully staffed around the clock. "National Hospital week can also remind us that our health is something we should not take for granted. Hospital personnel encourage preventive health care. Over the course of a year the hospital offers in formational programs of public interest," continued Mrs. Smith. Hospital personnel join doctors in calling attention to certain unhealthy lifestyle patterns, patterns that deserve consideration to see about "making a change for the better." Among them are smoking, overeating, exercising too little, getting too little rest, ignoring key warning symp toms, and not following the doctor's advice after un dergoing a checkup or some tests. National Hospital week is a good time to do what is possible to stay out of the hospital, and Memorial hospital's 290 full time and part time employees echo the 1978 NHW slogan, "Hospitals Wish You Well," in encouraging people to evaluate their eating, drinking, sleeping and recreational habits. One out of every six Americans is a hospital patient every year, but that number could be trimmed with thoughtful care of one's own good health. But when people do need hospital care, they are appreciative of » hn*niti»i White with gray and tan spots, female 10 months, spayed, litter box trained. within the community that is a modern health center, staffed with considerate, dedicated people. have a nice weekend.
