Harrison Students Rate High In Historical Contest Students of the seventh and eighth grade social studies classes of Harrison school in Wonder Lake have received the results of the Illinois State Historical Society district contest held at O'Neill Junior high school in Downers Grove. The students of Fred Reed's classes entered two categories in the annual contest. Thirty- eight pupils entered model projects dealing with Illinois' participation in the Battle of Shiloh fourgh in April 1862, during the Civil War. The model projects, numbering twenty, were each 2 by 2 feet in size and when combined produced an 8 by 10 foot recreation of the battle. Over 600 hand carved and hand painted figures were made and used in the display. The entire project took three months to make and was over 300 hours in production. Each of the thirty-eight students who worked on the 600- figure display received an "excellent" rating ribbon for their efforts. This was one of the largest number of awards given to the twenty schools present. In addition to the thirty-eight students involved in the display-model competition, twenty-eight students of Reed's language arts class entered research papers about Illinois history and twenty of the papers received awards. This was the largest group of awards given to all the schools in the competition. One of the Harrison school student's research papers, written by Donna Chesler, was given a superior rating by the judges. Miss Chester's paper now becomes eligible to go to the state competition to be held in Springfield May 25 for further awards.
