PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER -FRIDAY, MAY It, lf78 DIVOT DOLLS On The Sidelines By Dick Robbitt |§ Congratulations are in order to my good friend .Ken Swanson and his gallant group of Warriors for winning at least a share of the North Suburban baseball crown. Twenty-five years is a long time awaiting a conference baseball championship, and the Warriors in their last year in the North Suburban turned the trick. |:ji What is more amazing is the way in which they accomplished their goal. Losing the first game of a most important doubleheader 6 to 1, and not being the Warriors of old, they could have had a real letdown, but with a few words of wisdom between games by their genial coach, the Warriors broke from the barrier with two big runs in the top of the first, and behind the excellent pitching of Bobby Sharp won in easy fashion 10 to 0, with the senior righthander allowing one hit in the third after two were out. ' • The Warriors played errorless ball in both games, the mark of a true champion, and now only await the dutcome of the Zion-Mundelein game whenever it will be played to see if they share or win the title outright. The pressure now shifts from the Warriors who had to win one, to the :|:j Mustangs of Mundelein who must win two games. Many parents of the players were on hand for the doubleheader along with a good crowd of Warrior fans. To say the least, there was at least one nervous parent on hand for the games. Sitting next to, and trying to calm Mary Ann Sharp, mother of Bobby was no easy task. She went through the agony of every pitch, and even with the Warriors leading 10 to 0 in the last inning was still worried about the outcome of the game. Tried to tell her it was in the bag, but you know how these mothers are about their sons. A top of the fedora to Carrie Mortell of the McHenry girls track team. The young sophomore qualifed for the state finals this weekend at Charleston. It will be a great experience for Carrie, and with two years left in high school, we could have a state champion. Gary Gray's tennis team did a fine job in the North Suburban. Finishing behind Libertyville, Crystal Lake, and Lake Forest is no disgrace. All of these teams have indoor tennis throughout the year and a Jot of their players have the means to participate in tournaments during the summer all over the country. Mike Shanahan's swimmers although not qualifying anyone for the state finals, had an excellent season breaking many school records not only at home but away. Their season records of 12 and 4 is a step in the right direction. With limited numbers they did themselves proud this past season. The competition in the district was extremely strong, and again most of the suburban schools have a good year round program. One of these days we are going to write a column on the caliber of competition the Warrior teams must face when they compete in state meets. With the facilities some of these schools have, they would put most colleges to shame, including two Big 10 schools. Tonight the Warrior track team journeys to Rockford Guilford for the District meet. Looking over past § performances throughout the season, the Warriors have a chance to send several to the state finals next weekend. Let's hope the boys who have a chance, and the team comes through tonight. Only a mistake, put them in third place in the North Suburban, instead of second place. If the Warrior baseball team won last night against the :ji winner of the Dundee-Woodstock game, you can see them in action tomorrow at Elgin. The winner of that game will play in Elgin sometime tomorrows . Four games are scheduled in Elgin tomorrow. deflected and returned to the fairway. No harm was done to the cat which went scampering back to its home. Jeanie Remke literally fell in the creek on no. 17 as she was trying to rescue her ball. No chills and fever reported - just chagrin. The newly-formed Q Club finds as its charter members Mil Leisten, Joan Buss, Dee Overton, Laverne Harpling, Myrt Johnson and Betty Mohan. Well, perhaps next week will bring Happy Golfing! Liz. M.C.C. Constant reference to weather conditions becomes monotonous; however, Nature continues to be an important factor in the game of golf with the ladies of McHenry Country Club. Tuesday the 6th was another of those bleak, damp ness-laden days as the gals played Low Net in the various classes. No senational games were registered although Floss O'Connell in Class A turned in a respectable net 78 while Barb Weber in Class B had net 83. In Class C Jean Remke turned in a net 78. Jeanie was all smiles - she's moved up from Class D. and, in Class D Kitty Ballstaedt had low net of 78. Low putts were 31 run in by Anna Johnson in Class A. In Class B Char Zwissler and Dot Baker tied for low putts with 35 each. Joan Schloskey, in spite of wet feet and stiff toes, had low p itts of 34 in C lass C and Trish Sayler had 35 for low putts in Class D. Several chip-ins and a few birdies were also registered. Char Zwissler birdied no. 14, Floss O'Connell birdied no. 16 and Carol Cooney birdied no. 14 and 15. Judy Smithson chipped in no. 1, Liz Nolan on no. 5, Anna Johnson on no. 15 and Carol Cooney on no. 18. Moans and groans came from several of the women who reported tangling with trees. No groans from Carol Cooney, however, who combined a so-so drive with a similar kind of second shot to find herself in the disadvantageous positon having to go over the trap and trees on no. 13. Her third shot rose high in the air only to be caught by a branch of an overhanging oak which deflected the ball and dropped it within inches of the hole. She holed out for a par. Regardless of the seeming simplicity of the game there are various ways to play it. Another instance reported was that of Judy Smithson's second shot on no.5 Headed for the out of bounds, her ball caught the tail-end of a feline creature roaming in the area, Cut Down. MCHS Netters Finish Fourth In Standings ...at second base as Warrior Brian DiBlasi begins his slide, only to discover that the Libertyville second baseman already has the throw from the catcher. The Warriors found the base paths were trouble spots during the first game of the Doubleheader as they were caught stealing three timet, and picked off first base twice.
