It was the dream and the hope of Mrs. John Bruce Dodd, back in 1909 when she first thought of the idea of setting aside one day in the year to honor her father, William Smart and all American Fathers. It was a "mon­ ument" born of idealism, and her gratitude to her Father who had raised his family of six on the Western frontier, after his young wife had died. In 1910, a year later, her dream was realized, when with the help of Spokane's YMCA and the Spokane Ministerial Association, all the ministers of Spokane preached Father's Day sermons-- on the thrid Sunday of June. (Mrs. Dodd had preferred the first Sunday of June, her Father's birthday that year, but the ser­ mons could not be simultaneously prepared in time to meet the date.) So it is that now, by Congres­ sional action, Father's Day is a MRS. JOHN BRUCE DODD, MOTHER OF ' FATHER'S DAY DIES AT % Mrs. John Bruce Dodd, who conceived the idea of Father's Day in 1909, died in Spokane, Washington, her home town, on March 22, 1978. She had celebrated her 96th birthday on February 18. Active in the Fatherhood Movement until a few years ago, Mrs. Dodd, born Sonora Smart, had been in failing health for the past three years. She had been an active business woman, artist and poet. In that year, the State of Washington delcared a "Mrs. John Bruce Dodd Day" to mark the legislative national­ izing of her dream to honor The American Father. But, all the world will long remember that her vision to honor Father has be­ come a symbol of family solidar­ ity and unity.
