JUNE 9th & 10th OUR EVERY NITE SPECIAL 3 Small $C95 LOBSTER TAILS 9 COMPLETE DINNER WED. ONLY SPECIAL! PRIME RIB *6S0 COMPLETE DINNER Tammie Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Johnson of 3709 High street, McHenry, left early this year to spend a year in Africa as part of the Americans Abroad program of the American Field Service. Miss Johnson, who was not able to return to graduate with her MCHS class, has written of her unusual and interesting experiences in this letter to the Plaindealer: "i ve been here in south Africa for nearly three months now, so I have decided to write a note and tell you how I'm faring. "I am living in Parkview, which is a suburb of Johan nesburg, with the most beautiful people. "The Krieglers have four boys and one daughter and I love everyone of them. Never having had brothers, I find living with four boys super, but my sister is great, too! "My host father is an ad vocate (lawyer of the upper courts) and my mother has gone back to college for teaching, and studies diligently. "I attend Hoer Meisieskool Helpmekaar which is an Afrikaans girls school. South Africa has two major languages, English and Afrikaans, and my family is completely bilingual, but in school it's all Afrikaans! "I don't think I've learned anything in school yet, except patience. Being totally surrounded by people and things you can't, for the life of you, understand, is a sure way to pick patience up quickly. "I take Afrikaans, English, French, Biology, Art and History as major subjects in school and physical training, career choice, civil defense and bible studies are all required courses that I take once a week. "I am in matrick, which is equilivent to senior year of high school, and I am supposed to be studying hard for the final exams in December. "The school calendar is quite different from that in the States. School opens January 10, and that first term ends April 6. Then there are holidays until April 25, when school reopens. "That second term ends July 6, and begins again August 1. The third term closes December 7. "I have a holiday planned for every school break. First holiday, which is presently in progress, I am traveling with the school hockey team as a spectator. "We are going by train to Blomfontein, whi< Free State, and the Cape Provinc gone for ten day^, so I hope to see a lot of the country. "The second school holiday, my family has planned a trip to Kruger National Park. It is a natural game reserve in nor thern Transvaal. There is plenty of wild game there, so I plan to return with plenty of photos. "In the final holiday, my family and I are going to Plettinburg Bar, which is near the Cape. There's plenty of sea, sand and sun there, so I can't wait! "I have already had my first taste of 'darkest Africa.' The Easter weekend I went to a privately-owned game farm on the South Africa-Rhodesia border. "I was there for five days and totally fell in love with the African bush veld. I swam in the Limpopo river and looked across into Rhodesia. "I saw monkeys, baboons, impala, bush buck, warthogs and enough full size spiders to last a lifetime. "One evening we went looking for game deep in the bush and our car broke down. We had to walk seven miles in total African darkness back home again. It was beautiful! "I can't explain how won derful these last three months have been. I've met so many beautiful people and have had so many really super ex periences that I can't mention them all. "Some of the best times were the simplest things like the first time my host brother called me his sister. "I still can't get over the miracle work that the AFS people did when they placed me with the Krieglers. There couldn't be a better family in the world for me, except, of course, my own McHenry folks. "I think I best sign off now. I will try to write another letter later in the year to let you know how my next few months go along, and I must say that if they are half as beautiful as the last three months have been, I won't complain."
