Survival Fight If your budget has survived paying your taxes, it's time to make the vacation test. -Christian Sci. Monitor. No Spunk Wife to Husband: "I wish you had the spunk the government has-they don't let a little debt keep them from spending." -Dispatch, St. Louis. Saturday, June 17, is the day set for McHenry's monthly third-Saturday recycling drive to be held at the Market Place parking lot from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Members of the Youth Fellowship group of the First Methodist church will be working along with the McHenry County Defenders on the day of the drive providing labor and seeing that properly prepared newspapers, bottles, cans and aluminum are moved along in the second step of the recycling process. Money earned by the Youth Fellowship group at the last recycling drive at which they worked is now helping finance a trip for twelve high school students participating in a work project program at Wiley college in Texas. The McHenry County D6f£ritt£rs and all those working on the drives over the past four years would like to express appreciation to all those people who take the time to prepare their recycling materials, are willing to learn what can and what cannot be recycled, and who make the effort to bring their prepared materials to the Market Place parking lot on the third Saturday of every month. For those not yet involved in recycling who would like to help the environment by decreasing the amount of trash that ends in landfills throughout the county; for those who live in outlying areas and would like to cut down on the amount of throw-away material they must pay to have remdfved; and for those who would like to help community groups--here are a few guidelines to follow. 1-Newspapers should be tied securely in both directions in bundles that can be handled by the workers. Free rope is on hand at each of the drives for any person wanting to take some. 2-Clear, green or brown glass bottles should be clean and have any plastic or metal removed. 3-All-steel cans, such as those vegetables come in, should be washed, have labels removed, ends cut off and tucked inside, and flattened to save space. 4-All-aluminum products, such as TV dinner trays, siding scraps, and all-aluminum beverage cans should be clean and flattened as much as possible. Most pop and beer cans are neither all-aluminum nor all- steel, and consequently cannot be recycled because of their bi metal quality. Those must be disposed of through the usual trash disposal. Rather than buying beverages in non- returnable containers, the McHenry County Defenders encourages use of returnables. The per ounce cost is much less and the environment benefits from this action. Those with large quantities of prepared material to be picked up or with questions, should call either Mrs. Wm. (Alice) Howenstine or leave a message for Larry Wilson at the Methodist church, 385-0931. Honor School Bus Drivers Irene Weiss, left, and Sally Belzer were honored by the Transportation department of Districts 15 and 156 last Thursday for ten years of school bus driving. They are shown being presented awards for excellent service by Transportation Director Richard Glawe. Later, a luncheon was served on the bus lot at Sherman hill.
