Coach Gordon Stringer was not able to be present, but all are hoping he will be with them for the October get together. They tell us A1 and Alice Barbian came to join the McHenryites. How nice it would be to meet that fine couple again. Maybe somebody will send us a picture of the group next fall (black and white, not a colored photo). A little bird, through the grapevine, says we goofed in calling Marge Strassheim Dorothy. I didn't do that! Or, did I? Marge or Dorothy, she is one fine hostess at Snug Harbor. I made no mistake on that part. Now that our White Sox are burning up the league, Bob Adams wonders where all those Club fans are who were giving us a hard time a while back. Silence is their middle name. With a tornado threat an nounced one recent evening, we headed for the Fox Hole. Met the Larry Nimsgerns who had the same idea -- go to the basement when the storm is brewing. Chuck and Lois Peterson and their group were others who went down under. There were big doings at McHenry Recreation Thursday night when McHenry Rotarians paired off in special com petition. Vi Benrud was in costume, but couldn't bring her boys down the stretch for first place. But, nobody had more fun or spread more cheer than Vi. Ed Samen and Ken Bruce took second place, Denny Conway and Chuck Peterson third, Don Weingart and Bob Adams (a couple of big ones who shook down the timbers for fourth place), Marty Frederick and "Red" Tourville took fifth. Then along came Bob Blake and Ed Cepulis in sixth. Their hooks went straight. Bowling alleys and modern pin setting machines of today are a far cry from the days when boys worked the pits to set up the pins and sometimes play tricks on certain bowlers. An invitation to County Clerk Vernon Kays' retirement dinner Saturday night resulted in one of the best times the Walshes have had in many a moon. Vern was both praised and roasted, but came back with the best talk of the evening. Master of Ceremonies A1 Jourdan was one busy fellow as he moved the program along in good style. He was apparently happy to be handling the program for his close friend. When it comes to public of ficials, Vern Kays has to rate with the best. Add to that -- he is a "good egg". Vern was all smiles as he reported a phone call from Bill Veeck last Thursday. Of course, they solved all the White Sox problems. Old Bridge scored six times in the second inning and held on to win, 9-7 before the largest crowd of the season at the VFW field. Prior to Thursday's game, Johnsburg was tied for first place with Fox Hole with a 4 win, 0 loss record. Old Bridge was in fourth place with a 2 and 2 record. Johnsburg scored once in the first inning, with a double by Don Bentz driving in Wayne Hiller who had reached on an error. In the Bridge second, the league's leading hitter, Rick Wakitsch, led off the inning with a triple and before the inning had ended, Old Bridge had scored six runs. Greg Freund reached on an error following the triple, Ron Miller singled, Steve Rohrer singled and Tim Althoff doubled before Johnsburg was able to get anyone out. Singles by Dave Schaefer and Doug Freund preceded a walk to Tom Les and run-producing flyball by Joe Dehn. In all, eleven men batted, five of whom reached on hits. Johnsburg scored twice in their half of the inning. Mark Bentz singled and Tom Spasovich reached on an error by Old Bridge pitcher Greg Freund. Wayne Frantz followed with a misplayed flyball that fell for a single and a fielder's choice by Lloyd Smith scored the other run. Johnsburg tied the game at six, in the bottom of the third. A single by Hiller, followed by singles by Don and Mark Bentz highlighted the inning. Gary Gilpin led off the Bridge fourth with a fly to short left, that dropped in for a hit and a wild throw permitted Gilpin to circle the bases to give the Bridge a one-run lead. Joe Dehn tripled to lead off the fifth inning for the Bridge and scored what proved to be the winning run when Wakitsch grounded out. A double by Don Bentz in the bottom of the fifth, followed by a single by Ted Freund pulled Johnsburg back within one at 8- 7, after five full innings. Old Bridge added an in surance run in the sixth, thanks to a single by Rohrer and an error by first baseman Don Bentz of Johnsburg. In the seventh, Jim Meyers led off for Johnsburg with a single, but could advance no farther than second as the next three batters made out to end the game. For Old Bridge, Wakitsch had a triple and a double while Miller, Rohrer and Doug Freund each had two singles each. Freund added three defen sive gems in left field to aid the Bridge cause. t For Johnsburg, Don and Mark Bentz both enjoyed three hit games, with Don driving in 2 runs. Fox Hole Wins, Remains Unbeaten Fox Hole held Hiller Con struction to two hits and and pounded out 16 hits and scored 16 runs and defeat Hiller's 16-1 in Thursday's first game, to remain unbeaten and in first place. Fox Hole scored 3 times in the first inning, 4 in the second, 6 in the fourth and added 3 runs in the fifth inning to take the easy decision from Hiller's. Twig Miller paced Fox Hole with 3 hits in 4 trips, scoring 3 times and driving in a pair of runs. Dick Kazlausky added 3 hits and 2 RBI's, and Dick Meyers and Marty Conway drove in 3 runs each with 2 hits apiece. Dave Smith added two hits with one being a 2-run homer off the hands of the Hiller left fielder. Fox Hole is now the only unbeaten team in the league and appears ready for Thur sday's showdown with second place Johnsburg Tavern. Fox Hole has been hitting consistently and scoring loads of runs and will be hard to beat. Johnsburg Tavern knows the importance of the Fox Hole game, and will not want to lose two games in succession. Qt fjiig MWIVJ rfl IMPROVING FUEL ECONOMY Energy is a valuable resource aadio are your recreation dollars. So Mercury outboard*' test driven have passed along a few fuel- conserving tips that can add up to sizable savings. Start by checking the fuel system in your boat. Make sure that all fuel line fittings are tight and drip-free. The carburetor should be seated firmly and if the casket leaks, have it replaced. The fuel filter should be doing its job ef fectively without unduly holding back the supply. Also keep a dean bottom. This lessens the effect of underwater drag on the boat Salt water boaters are reminded that a well-brushed bottom surface, free of marine organisms, has more go and handles better besides. And finally, remember that the skipper who maintains a steady hand on the throttle, and charts a true course, sets a shining example for the rest of the boating public.
