The U.S. Department of Agriculture < I SDA» has licensed Ihe firsl killed-virus vaccine for protecting swine against pseudorabies, ac cording to LeRoy Biehl. I niversity of Illinois Extension s w i n e v e t e r i n a r i a n Pseudorabies is a viral disease that can kill young pigs Swine producers should use the vaccine with care, warns Biehl. because pseudorabies antibodies in vaccinated swine produce blood test reactions identical to those from infected swine The inability to distinguish vaccinated from infected hogs could cause restrictions on moving vac cinatsed animals The USDA license allows only swine use of the vaccine, says Biehl. Officials recommend vaccinating newborn pigs over three days old if they are nursing non-immune sows If piglets are nursing immune sows, however, delay vac cination until maternal an tibody levels decline, generally when pigs are three to eight weeks old Biehl recommends vac cinating breeding animals twice a year -sows just before breeding and boars anytime. If hogs are exposed to the disease, the entire herd may require immediate vaccination.
