SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLAINDEALER - PAGE 22 -WEDNESDAY. JULY 12.1»78 Slash fuel bills with new insulated siding Homeowners in old, unin sulated homes can cut their heating fuel use by as much as 20 per cent through proper installation of insulated aluminum siding, according to a study by the Aluminum Association. \ The study, according TO Paul Mara, technical director of the Association, is based on standard engineering cal culations for an average-size uninsulated home of 1700 square feet of exterior wall area (excluding windows and doors). Typical estimated dollar savings per year for this av erage home heated with fuel oil at 46* a gallon are: Boston, Ma.--$125. Stamford, Ct.-- $120. Philadelphia. Pa.-- $100. Richmond. Va.--$85. Detroit, Mi.--$140. Denver, Co.-- $140, Portland, Or.--$100, San Francisco, Ca.--$70, At lanta. Ga.--$70. Savings in a home heated with electricity will be greatest, and a home heated with gas the Icrivest, Mara says. Over the past 30 years, aluminum siding has been purchased chiefly to improve the appearance of a home and eliminate periodic repainting costs. Now, with fuel costs more than doubled in recent years, reduced heating bills can save the homeowner almost as much as reduced home maintenance. Mara cautions that all sid ing materials, including stone and brick, have minimal in sulating value. Aluminum siding has increased insulat ing value when installed with special backing materials such as polystyrene and reflective aluminum foil. The combination of aluminum siding, aluminum foil, and polystyrene backer has an insulating value of R-2.5, equivalent to 12 inches of brick or concrete. Installers can eliminate additional air leaks by caulk ing around window and door openings before installing the window and door trim and the siding. "If you're re-siding your home, and it's uninsulated," advises Mara, "the addi tional cost that polystyrene backerboard and aluminum foil would add to a typical aluminum siding application can pay for itself in reduced energy costs just about any where in the United States. "Since most homes are un insulated, you could almost say insulated aluminum sid ing should be used whenever a home is being re-sided." 3 DAYS OF AMES $ MMLI'TS GOOD FOR 25% OFF YOUR 1 I I I I I I I >ers WHEN coupon VALID JUiy Mr, Dons --ORDER " I ---i Furs) 1207 N. THIRD ST. ONE HOUR CLEANERS McHENRY, ILLINOIS . Probable fuel cost savings resulting from the installation of siding can be estimated reasonably accurately. However, actual dollar sav ings will vary with heating system efficiency, type of construction, local climatic conditions, solar exposure, and other factors, so it is im possible for a contractor or manufacturer to actually guarantee specific savings. Installed with an insulation backer over aluminum foil, siding can cut fuel use in an old, uninsulated home by as much as 20 per cent. One such option is solid vinyl siding. This material cannot rot, blister, peel or decay. It doesn't even re quire painting and colors permeate the material, so they won't disappear with the ravages of weather or time. Vinyl also has insulating properties which make it at tractive during these days of energy concern. Aluminum siding also of fers low maintenance qual ities, plus a number of inter esting embossed woodgrain effects. Baked-on colors prevent chipping, blistering and flaking. Whatever its finish*, tex ture or color, aluminum cleans easily with water alone or with a mild detergent solution followed by rinsing and drying. Over the yeacs, savings in time, maintenance and materials can add up to an impressive total. Durability is an important property of aluminum. De pending upon the product, lifetimes of 20 and even 30 years are not uncommon. Also, aluminum may readily be patifted. repainted or reenarireied July -13-14-15 Thurs. - Fri. - Sat.
