"With all these close relationships, our members were surprised when the at torney for the developer in the proceeding seemed to regard them as foreign invaders. It s true that our association exists to preserve some open space between the three largest cities in the county, but when it comes to protecting the countryside we see no conflict of interest between McHenry residents and their cousins on the farm "As you know, this an nexation proposal would bring something like 5.000 people to the area south of the new high school, between the Crystal,. Lake blacktop and Curran ^>road We don't object to the annexation, but we do oppose that kind of density, and will continue to oppose it in any way we can "The acquisition of non- farmable -but - buildable acreage for larger hcrnesites ^ makes sense for the city, and attracts people who want to m 'MEANWHILE BACK AT THE COURTHOUSE" BRANCH III COURT Associate Judge In hearings before Judge Michael Sullivan on July 19, Warren R. "Do you really want to see the corn fields on Curran road s p r o u t i n g a p a r t m e n t buildings? Or would you prefer larger lot sizes, good 1 acre development along Curran road, with the pleasant Boone creek area set aside for the park this community is going to need? "Like every city, McHenry has problems. With its unique riverside location, it has unique traffic problems. City officials candidly admit that tftey have no immediate solution to the traffic mess, because* solution involves decisions by county, state and federal agencies. The only aspect of the situation that McHenry can control is its own growth - how many people, hew soon, and where 'Despite the sound economic and environmental arguments against this proposal, the outcome probably rests on political action by citizens of McHenry on their appearance at future hearings and their communication with council members Though many of our members are involved with schools and other community activities, we have no voice in its policy-making process We can only hope that our McHenry neighbors too, are concerned about runaway growth, and will ^lakeMheir concern known to their neigh bors and public officials before i t ' s t o o l a t e , ^ \ "Sincerely.
