The hot weather and high I humidity made the small cup of water very precious to most of the runners. Some drank it.... Others •• showered with it.... But most of the runners spilled it. JULY . 1»78 A new course record was set at Tuesday's running of the McHenry marathon, as the largest group of participants ever started the 7-mile race. Joe Paul of Des Plaines, negotiatedfhe 7-mile course in a time of 36 minutes, 43 seconds to establish a new marathon record. Of the record number of 171 participants who started the race, 163 ran the entire 7-mile course.
