PAGE 18 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 2. It78 Guide To Travel (Extra Help for Motorists) Motorists traveling the state this summer and fall can ex pect some extra help in getting free brochures and expert advice about local vacation destinations, according to the Illinois Office of Tourism, Department of business and Economic Development Two newly staffed Highway Welcome centers, say tourism officials, currently provide travelers assistance at con veniently located interstate highway rest stops in Grundy county on eastbound Route 80, and in Union county on nor thbound Route 57 The full-service centers provide booklets, maps, special interest brochures and tailored personal tips on where to go for everything from small-town festivals, campgrounds and popular antique villages, to big city nightlife and major cultural events As part of an ongoing project to develop similar centers as major highway entry points throughout the state, the Union and Grundy county facilities also boast new "graduates" of a recent 2.000-mile cram course in Illinois tourism The eight travel counselors, four of whom will staff each current center, took the whirlwind familiarization jaunt last month; visiting major destinations throughout the state in seven days, the group was accompanied at various times by regional represen tatives of the Office of Tourism. "I think they were a bit surprised at what they saw," said Steve Lynch, travel development coordinator with the Office of Tourism and impromptu chauffeur during the trip. "They'll be hard to stump when it comes to answering questions," Lynch added, saying that counselors were coached throughout the tour regarding their upcoming roles as courteous representatives of the Illinois travel industry. Made possible in part through the cooperation of dozens of businesses who donated time and material to support the trip (from free hotel rooms to complimentary restaurant meals), the hectic odyssey enjoyed a special bonus. "A local recreational vehicle dealer donated free use of a twenty-five foot motorhome," said Lynch. "It gave the counselors a chance to ex perience attractions from a tourist's point of view." Starting with an introduction to the 240.00-acres Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois, the group cruised through outdoor local treats such as Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, Garden of the Gods, and Marion's Crab Or chard and Egyptian Railroad. "It was a little hectic sometimes." sighed Andrew MaHskas, manager of Illinois' new welcome center program, Auto buys. Big Discontinued Tire Sale! Want to save on new tires? "They got wet and tired and a little cramped from hiking through the Shawnee Forest," added Maliskas. "But they probably know as much as anybody about what there is to see in the state. Everyone held up well." Despite those rigors, the tour continued through a potpourri of travel sites: the rolling Amish countryside near Arthur and Areola. Springfield's Lincoln attractions, and then north toward Chicago's shopping treasures, museums and nearby fun spots such as Marriott's Great America and Old Chicago Amusement park Illinois state parks attracted over 30 million visitors last year; Welcome center coun selors added to that figure by browsing through Zion's Illinois Beach recreation area Recently revamped by Holiday Inns, the resort features state park attractions bordering Lake Michigan's natural dunes, hiking trails and swimming beaches. Northern Illinois weekend getaways such Seven Acres Museum and Village,Rock ford's Time Museum, and the 19th Century ambiance of Galena served as a contrast to the glitter of Chicago and its mile-high skyscrapers Tours ^ through the tiered streets of Galena included visits to the U.S. Grant Home, local restored mansions and a brief glance at several of the town's many antique shops. Soaring limestone cliffs at Mississippi Palisades State Park near Savanna served as a fitting introduction to western Illinois' river corridor. Restored Mormon homes at Nauvoo and a look at Peoria's sternwheel paddleboat Julia Belle Swain were included, as well as area attractions near the Spoon River Valley Logging only three days of rain during the trip, the group finally returned to Springfield for a short rest before taking up duties at preaching what they had just practiced-enjoying the travel treasures of Illinois "Welcome centers will allow us to convince travelers to spend a few days in our state, hopefully directing them off the highway and toward other destinations," said Sandy Guettler. managing director of the Office of Tourism. What lust One Person Can Do Buying Bread When buying bread or rolls, be careful If the interior has a grayish cast instead of being clear white or slightly creamy colored, it probably means an in ferior flour was used or that it was processed poorly Look for crusts that are uniform in color and thickness. Ideally, the crust should be golden brown. James Lee Outler. Preacher And Bus Driver Every Friday night, a 47- year-old Pentecostal preacher tops his clerical suit with a busman's cap for his weekly trip from the southern tip of Florida to its remote northern woods. The preacher, who calls himself Bishop James Lee Outler, takes special passengers. Most are women, black and white, old and young. Many are members of his congregation, the Church of the Living God by Faith, in Hallandale. And they all share one thing: a spouse, parent, child or loved one doing time in a state penitentiary He brings them there for visiting days. The pilgrimage, at a low $20 fare for the 700-mile round trip, begins in the parking lot of a Miami shopping center. Hymn singing marks the journey. Each Saturday morning, the driver brings his passengers to the prisons, rests, then picks them up in mid-afternoon. He soothes the tearful, "You all got the next time to look forward to." Home after midnight, he gets some sleep before Sunday services. The unusual ministry began when a woman complained that the poor couldn't get to the prisons fdr visiting days. "We need a bus," James Outler told his wife. "Why don't you pray for one? she replied. Within a week, he found an old 40-seat vehicle, arranged for a loan, and bought it. "God can do anything," said the minister. As he drives his bus, his voice sometimes rises in prayer. "Take care of those behind prison doors, Lord. There was a man named Jesus who opened the doors for Peter." James Lee Outler prays. And he does what he can. What more can you ask? For Company Sued Illinois attorney General William Scott filed a consumer fraud lawsuit against the Ford Motor company on behalf of all Illinois consumers who have bought recent model Ford cars that are prone to having cracked engine blocks. Auto trade information indicates the only proper repair for a cracked engine block is replacement at a cost of several hundred dollars. The models prone to having such a defect are: 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1977 passenger cars with 400W cubic inch displacement (Windsor) engines, and 1976 and 1977 passenger cars and trucks with 351 M or 400 C cubic inch displacement (Geveland) engines " vM'iti NATIONAL FREEZER MONTH 10-cu.ft. freezers on sale now! 8088-087 4028 087 Both freezers in handsome new almond color.
