Al 'GUST 2.1178 Summer Health Tips Mmquitoftf-Annoyance And Disease Carriers Mosquitoes don't worry about where their next meal is coming from They'll pick any warm-blooded thin-skinned host birds, wild or domesticated animals or man to supply their breakfast, lunch and dinner The tiny draculas' enormous appetites ruin most summer evenings outdoors for Midwest residents and efforts to control the mosquito nuisance seem to be controversial, complicated and expensive Some mosquitoes are vectors (carriers) of very serious diseases, but the one that causes the most complaints \ locally is the flood-Water mosquito, a vicious biter Even though it doesn't carry diseases, the flood-water mosquito can cause secondary infections and cause noticeable reactions to its bites in sen sitive persons. McHenry county, with its flood plans and frequent rainfall is a natural home for the flood water mosquito*, which regards all warm blooded creatures as its natural prey The mosquito population can be controled by the following methods, recommended for use in this order by the McHenry County Health department: Destroy breeding places for mosquitoes (water holes, bird baths, clogged gutters and old tires) and also destroy mosquito larvae with larvicide in those areas - with care. (Larvicide must be registered with the Environmental Protection Agency, must be approved by the U. S. Department of the Interior for use in wildlife sanctuaries and We pay the highest interest rates allowed by law from 5'/«% on our daily passbook accounts up to 8% on our 8 10 year certificate accounts However, for a limited time o«ly, we are offering high interest rates plus F REE GIFTS tor our depositors We have selected 18 items which can be yours free or at greatly reduced prices for deposits as low as $200 First Federal Savings is introducing two new ways to save 8% 8year Certificates We offer our highest interest rate ever with new 8% certificates. Encourage biological control. Two of the methods used are relying on larvae-eating fish and hormonal interference with the growth of the larvae. Un fortunately, the hormonal method has not been fully developed. Destroy mosquitoes chemically. Because spraying or fogging for mosquitoes with chemicals can be hazardous to man, chemicals should be used as a last resort, to prevent the insects from spreading disease. A Mosquito Abatement Policy statement adopted by the County Board of Health in 1974 encourages Communities to follow Health Department direction in fighting the mosquito nuisance. Because of the potential for harmful effects that some chemicals used in mosquito fogs and sprays have on food for man and animals, the Health Department recom mends that communities not spray for adult mosquitoes on a routine basis, but it only be done during an endemic or epidemic situation when rapid reduction of the mosquito population would be necessary to arrest the transmission of disease by organisms carried by mosquito populations. C o m m u n i t i e s a n d homeowners can take full advantage of Health Depart- m e n t i n f o r m a t i o n a l , monitoring and control ser vices to get rid of their backyard mosquito pests. Learn how you and your community can stop the mosquito invasion this summer from Health Department pamphlets available at village halls and city offices. YOUTH ON THE MOVE Third Party Totals Since 1860, there have been only four presidential elections in which all third parties together polled more than 10 per cent of the vote: James Baird Weaver and his Populist Party, 1892; Theodore Roosevelt and the National Progressives, 1912; the La Follette Progressives, 1924; and. George Wallace's American Party, 1968 4-H Sports • Besides the large array of projects 4-H members enroll in, there are many fun activities and sports to par ticipate in, too! McHenry county 4-H clubs recently finished the summer baseball roster. The Greenwood Handi- Helpers finished the season with a 4-0 record. The all-girls team will advance to play in the 4-H division at the District Illinois Farm Sports festival. The Boys "A" League 4-H club team that will advance to District is the Community Govers and Gophers, Rich mond. The team had a 4-0 record. The harvard Prairie Toppers 4-H club, 7-0, will represent the county in the coed division of district play-offs. The Illinois Farm Sports festival is sponsored by Farm Bureau. The district playoffs were held July 20. The results of our teams are as follows: Harvard Prairie Toppers Coed team won first place against Lee county, 22-3. The other two teams did not place. You Got A Turkey - 4-H'ers enrolled in the bowling project should be familiar with this term Members will be evaluated on their bowling skills and form at Wayne's Lanes on July 24 Mary Payne. Woodstock and Bill Hahn have been working on this years' skill test 4-H'ers "Size Up" Bicycles - Kids can outgrow their bicycles just the way they do their shoes and clothing. But a bike that no longer "fits" a child can be a real safety hazard. To judge whether a bike is the right size, 4-H-ers enrolled in the bicycle program follow these guidelines: The ball of the foot should touch the ground when the cyclist is astride the bike saddle. The knee will be slightly bent when the pedal is at the bottom of the pedaling stroke When the saddle is properly adjusted, the legs will be slightly bent, giving more power as the cyclist pushes down alternately on the pedals. The saddle can be adjusted by raising ir lowering and should be paralld with the ground. Handlebars also can be raised or lowered. They should turn without hitting the knee. 4-H members, 8-19, can improve their bicycle knowledge and skills in a variety of learn-by-doing projects supervised by the Cooperative Extension service and supported by the Goodyear Tire and rubber company. Learning how to choose a bike, how it works and how to keep it in top operating condition can be both educational and fun. Bicycle safety activities stress understanding and obeying "rules of the road" as they apply to bike drivers. Randy Borchardt, 5-year-old 4-H club member and Ken Kunzer, member of the McHenry County Youth council will be administering a bicycle safety check and driving skill test to 4-H members enrolled in the bicycle project. The event will be held July 25, 10 a.m. at Hansen pavilion on the McHenry County fairgrounds, Woodstock. r SERVICE NEWS 1 5 - • - - | The McHenry Plaindealer riinmisnan • CITODIIintO 19/3 3812 W*i t Elm Str** t Phon* 385-0170 McHanry. Shull joined the Marine Corps in January of 1976 Keepin' Healthy We all know the importance of having children immunized against polio, measles, whooping cough and other childhood diseases. And we also know that, in some cases, one "shot" is not enough to im munize a child To be fully protected against polio, for example, a child must have three or four doses of the vaccine But did you know that there is one vaccine that is also im portant for adults? Everyone- no matter how old -should receive a tetanus (lockjaw) booster at least every 10 years Five or six cases of tetanus occur each year in Illinois The fatality rate varies from 35 to 70 percent in unimmunized in dividuals. Tetanus, or lockjaw, occurs when tetanus spores enter the body during an injury, usually a puncture wound con taminated with soil, street dust or animal or human feces The spores cbri also enter the body through burns and trivial or unnoticed wounds Although the famous "rusty nail" can cause tetanus, the majority of tetanus cases occur following injuries considered too trivial for medical consultation Symptoms ot tetanus usually occur 10 to 14 days following infection, although the in cubation period can vary from four to 21 days Symptoms include painful muscular contractions, primarily of the jaw and neck muscles, secondarily of the trunk To help prevent tetanus, the Illinois Department of Public Health advises a tetanus booster following even a minor wound (especially a puncture wound) for anyone who has not had a tetanus booster within five years Tetanus vaccine is given to children and infants along with diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough) vaccines (DPT immunizations). But the DPT series will not provide life long protection against tetanus So. remember, no matter what your age, you never outgrow your need for tetanus boosters -- one every 10 years, or one following a wound if it has been five years or more since your last booster If you want more information about tetanus immunization, contact your local health department, or write * to: Illinois Department of Public Health, 535 West Jefferson, Springfield, 111 62761 I DOES YOUR HOME QUALIFY?
