TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 9, 1968) A letter from McHenry County State's Attorney Richard Cross is being mailed to almost 10,009 individuals and businesses who have failed to pay this year's personal property tax. Those who pay prior to September will owe only the original amount/ plus two percent interest (1 percent per month). The total amount is stated on the accompanying delinquent notice. George Cowgill, ad­ ministrative assistant to the dean at McHenry County college, reports that 112 students have registered and paid their fees for the 1968 fall semester. Students have been scheduled to register through August in preparation for classes beginning Sept. 16. The new water well is progressing favorably. Drilling had reached a depth of 170 feet, the last 50 feet through limestone. It is expected that another 50 feet of limestone will result in an ample supply of water. In the meantime, limited sprinkling of lawns is necessary. The supply is not critical at this point, but a noticeable drop has been noted on the nights when sprinkling is permitted. -- J "MEAlNWHILE BACK AT THE COURTHOUSE" outboard motor races on [ river which are being held Sunday, are attracting more attention each week and were witnessed by a large crowd of spectators gathered along the shores of the river. Rather too large a crowd congregated on Buch's pier, it seems for the timbers, which could not bear the added weight of the many people, gave 'way, giving those on the pier a good scare and some wet feet. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 11, 1938) The McHenry County board of supervisors, by unanimous vote, set the date for a special election in the county to determine whether to float a bond issue of $130,000 to finance a bridge rebuilding program caused by the flood waters last month The date chosen for the election is Tuesday, Sept. 6. The resolution calling for the special election was passed following the committee report 'which estimated the damage done to bridges in the county at $126,500 The added $3,500 was included to pay for the cost of the election St. Mary's famous for its chicken and duck dinners, which will be served in the school hall by the Christian Mothers society Aug. 14. Supper will be served in the evening. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 0, 1953) Six violators of laws of sanitation were discovered along the Fox river by T.E. Philbin of Aurora, a member of the Sanitary Water board, Illinois Department of Public Health He was assisted by John Barnings of McHenry, who is in charge of main­ tenance for the Division of Waterways. The investigation started as the result of sewage material found a few weeks ago in the water and on the beach on Riverside drive As a result of the discovery all Red Cross swimming was discontinued and the beach closed tem­ porarily by the city of McHenry Health department. For the second time within the last three weeks McHenry police officers were responsible tor the return of run-away BRANCH III COURT Associate Judge In hearings before Judge Leonard Brody on August 2, Phillip A. Gorbachik, 618 Country Club, was found guilty of transportation of alcoholic liquor and was fined $25 and costs. Catherine A. Perz, Crystal Lake, guilty of speeding, fined $15 and costs. Michael B. Becko, Fox Lake, guilty of speeding, fined $13 and costs. Robert J. Hosie, 1003 Totem trail, not guilty of speeding. Walter M Allred, 5008 Ashland drive, not guilty of failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Steven M Fino, 3316 W Broad, not guilty of an im­ proper u-turn Keith R. Nelson, Woodstock, guilty of speeding, fined $16 and costs. Gary G.
