The first symptom is generally a temperature above 104 degrees F . lasting from one to six days As the infection progresses, the pet experiences weight loss, discharge from the eyes and nose, and extreme thirst About 25 percent of the affected animals develop a temporary bluish-white eye discoloration Statistics indicate that the mortality rate from hepatitis for dogs, especially puppies, is very high Dogs that do recover are slow to regain lost weight Once established. the hepatitis virus is excreted for months in the urine, even when the dog appears to have recovered from the disease Susceptible animals are in­ fected by contact with the contaminated urine, feces, bedding or toys used by a sick dog Dogs in the country may become infected after exposure to the urine of foxes, coyotes or raccoons with the disease Symptoms of hepatitis and distemper are quite similar Dogs vaccinated against distemper may come down with hepatitis, while the pet owner wonders why the distemper shot didn't "take " Hepatitis and distemper are separate diseases and pets should be vaccinated against both There are excellent vaccines that will protect your dog against hepatitis, or a com­ bination of hepatitis, distemper and leptospirosis These vaccines are constantly being modified and improved to offer the most protection with the least side effects This continuing search for improved vaccine protection has resulted in the control of one disadvantage associated with hepatitis vaccination Occasionally, hepatitis vac­ cination has caused a reaction known as "blue eye " Certain attenuated 'weakened) vaccine virus actually grows in the dog's cornea, causing it to become opaque Blue eye generally disappears within several weeks, although per­ manent blindness results in some cases A new vaccine for prevention of canine hepatitis has recently been developed and is now available to veterinarians It contains an attenuated virua that will not cause blue eye, and thus represents a significant advance in vaccine safety Puppies, the prime targets of hepatitis infection, should receive their first inoculation at about nine to twelve weeks of age Before that time, puppies are protected by the immunity transmitted from vaccinated mothers Annual vaccination for all dogs is strongly recommended Dr Stear regrets that he is unable to personally answer letters from pet owners He suggests that readers consult their own veterinarians when their pets have problems Today's Youth BY PATRICK DUDGEON Get A Card Now's the time to obtain a social security card --if you haven't already done so You need a social security number if your work is covered by the social security law Show your card to your employer when you start to work or when you change jobs so that your wages will be properly credited to your social security earnings record Your social security record is also used for income tax pur­ poses You may be asked to give your social security number to anyone who pays dividends, in­ terest, or other income that must be reported to the Internal Revenue Service If you don't already have a social security number, you can get an application for one from any social security office Try to apply for a card at least four weeks before you'll need it You need only one number dur­ ing a lifetime.
