PAGE* - PLAINDEALER - * R1DAY. AUGUST 4.1»78 EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR jjr V 5 Gary Gray, McHenry high tennis coach, was one happy fellow when a large group turned out for the Jaycee tennis tournament See separate story ^ At times this summer, as we drove from one playground to another, it seemed like tennis interest was lagging It must be that we hit the courts at the wrong time Tennis is a great sport and fine exercise (The sport part, we witness The exercise, we only observe) Suppose you saw Petie .. Schaefer in the parade last . Sunday He says that Bernie Matchen told him to hop aboard They needed one more ? performer % Have been trying to think of a costume for Petie to wear next year How about a White Sox > uniform A team of mules > couldn't drag him into the parade in a Cub uniform A card from across the pond says, "I hope you are taking 1 care of Bob " * Of course the Bob is "Big" r. Adams. His wife and son, * Brian, are visiting her native land Fall athletic schedules are coming to our desk Marian Central has had their list in for some time, but has been held 'til now when interest will gain by leaps and bounds Northern Illinois University, where many local young people enter the halls of higher learning, has sent in their football schedule They open with a night game Sept 16 at home vs Western Michigan That date will roll around sooner than we think if the Cubs could finish out the season playing the St Louis Cardinals, they would walk right into the top of their division There seems to be no ex planation as to why one team can hold such an edge over another * Why the Sox even won a game at Boston' * The Red Sox usually kill other teams in their own park as they clear the fences with regularity The White Sox dipped into their none too healthy bullpen for a fellow named Mike Proly to start the Tuesday night game All he did was make them hit most everything he threw to the infield and finished the game by striking out the last batter in the ninth Let's hope they don't send Proly back to the bullpen. He deserves a rotation start Our "Little Helen" was clicking away at the line-o-type machine when I walked in. She had something to say and her eyes were smiling. It seems she used to work a lot of crossword puzzles and knew the word "ait". In fact it was listed in her dictionary Not in ours . „ Anybody else know the word" JOHNSBURG SCHOOLS PHYSICALS FOR ATHLETES Hope you read the details in the Wed., issue If not. look for it on page 7 We don't run the same notices as news stories twice. This is an extra reminder to be at the Junior high gym Friday night Maybe you heard this one But. what the heck! Two caterpillars were crawling across the grass when a butterfly flew over them They looked up, and one nudged the other and said: "You couldn't get me up in one of those things for a million dollars'" McHenry | | Country Club § by John Busscher In the fourth and final round of the President s tournament played at the club last Sunday, in Flight A, Ed Buss with a round of 75 defeated Don Hojnacki who had one of his infrequent, so called, bad days Flight B winner was Norm Simon over Bill Jacobs in a closely fought match, while in Flight C, Hank Mutschinsky defeated Tom Barton, who couldn't seem to get going on his usually steady game. Bob Jemiola beat Jack Smithson in a match that found both players playing steady golf and the contest was not decided until the fifteenth hole. In Flight E, John Christensen had a hot first nine and held on to defeat Joe Gekumino in another class contest. < The first round of the club championship will be played at the club on Sunday, August 6. Defending champions are Art Jackson, club champion, Ron Becker, handicap club champion and Doe Carelli, senior handicap club cham pion The competition in all divisions will be great this year and all defending champions will have to be at their best to repeat A coward is a man who lets his fears control him. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Five Teams Vie For Three Playoff Spots Five teams are battling for three playoff positions as the regular season comes to a close for all but two teams, Wed nesday, August 2. King's Row will meet St. Regis in a very important doubleheader Monday, August 7. Standings Old Bridge Raymond's King's Row St. Regis O'Brewery Rusty Nail Little John's Hospital < The Old Bridge Softball club clinched first and a playoff position back on July 12 with a victory over Raymond's Bowl. Raymond's has clinched a playoff position but King's Row could, by winning their last 3 games, plus a Bowl loss to Regis, overtake the Bowl for second place. St. Regis sits in a position where they could win three games, tie for second with Raymond's, but get the third place position due to two losses earlier in the season to Raymond's Both O'Brewery and Rusty Nail would need victories Wednesday evening, including a Nail win in the June 14 suspended game with Little John's, which is tied after eight innings. The wins, plus three King's Row losses would have three teams tied at identical 11-10 marks. Since the Nail defeated King's Row twice and lost twice to the Brewery, while King's Row won two of three from the Brewery, we would not be able to determine a fourth place team unless a three-team round robin, double-elimination playoff occurred Playoffs were scheduled to begin on Monday. August 7 and are already rescheduled because of the Regis Row doubleheader If the Row does lose a pair on Monday, along with a loss to the Old Bridge, then the playoffs could be delayed until the following Monday, August 14. Watch the paper for details. Rusty Nail Makes Bid For Playoffs The Rusty Nail swept an 11-10 decision over King's Row in a game very important to both regarding the playoff positions on Wednesday, July 19 Steve Lane homered, singled and scored twice for the Nail. John Connell had a 2-run homer and Jim Lay added a homerun. Ray Thelen and Twig Miller each had 2 hits and 2 runs scored. John Hiller tripled and scored, while Bill Huff had a big pinch hit, a 2-run single in the eighth to help win the game. John Walkington had 4 hits, 3 runs scored and an RBI for King's Row Randy Schultz had 3 hits and an RBI and Chuck Marke added a pair of doubles and one single, good for 3 RBI's and 2 runs scored Tim Whitman had 3 hits and 2 RBI's, while Tom Whitman twice tripled with an RBI. Willie Howard added • run- acoring double and scored 2 runs. King's Row 0 1 3 Rusty Nail 0 3 4 2 0 0 3 0 1 -10 0 3 X -11 0 0 1 Old Bridge Overcomes Jinx. Beats Hospital The Old Bridge Softball club accomplished something they hadn't done in' two years previous. They swept 3 straight from McHenry hospital during the regular season with an 14-5 win on July 19. Joe Dehn led the attack with 4 hits, 4 RBI's and 2 runs scored Steve Rohrer came off the disabled list to drive in 3 runs with a homerun and go 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored Charlie Jeske went 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and Gary Gilpin added a solo homerun. Tom Les singled twice and drove in 2 runs and Rick Wakitsch singled and tripled with a run scored and an RBI Ron Miller added a pair of singles and made some truly excellent plays in the field at shortstop. Pete Blackburn had 3 hits and 3 RBI's for Hospital. Rich Hopper added 3 more hits and 2 runs scored. Clarence Sossong and Rich Naponelli each singled in a run, while Terry Vandenboom scored a run with a base hit.
