Aug 4. 11. 18. 1978) What Just One Person Can Do Alma Margosian, Research Benefactor The ordeal of watching her husband die of leukemia could have left Alma Margosian embittered and despairing. Instead she made a remarkable decision. Mrs. Margosian is donating her entire 1978 salary to cancer research. The gift, which means giving up about $9,000 in paychecks, was not made impulsively. Her commitment grew with the awareness of "the futility of my husband's efforts" to fight leukemia with chemotherapy Edward Margosian; a sheriff's lieutenant who died in May, 1977, was "an extremely strong man," says Mrs. Margosian. But his progress was all downhill. Chemotherapy was not enough. Mrs. Margosian's donation will aid research on nutrition as a cancer inhibitor. Her paychecks, sent to the Linus Pauling Institute in Menlo Park, Calif., will mean living on her husband's $408 monthly retirement check - and a drastic change in lifestyle. "I'm not in any position to give up a year's salary, but I feel so strongly about this," she says. "I hope other people will be so motivated so that more research funds can be available. If more effort can be made toward cancer research, I think one year of my time is worth it." What one person can do in a given situation is often limited only by the amount of deter mination and devotion to a cause. For Alma Margosian • and for each of us - lore can become a means toward reaching out to countlesl suffering persons. ; Courthouse Squares Personally.
