St. Regis needed at least one win to make the playoffs. Two wins would give Regis third place but two losses would knock them out. King's Row had already clinched a playoff position but two losses would drop them into fourth place. Both teams came out winners as Regis took the first game 5-3 in eight innings and King's Row won game two 9-8. A wrap up on the games will appear in the Plaindealer next week. The doubleheader split fills the playoff match ups which began Wednesday night. First place Old Bridge will be out to avenge last year's playoff losses to St. Regis in one matchup. The other matchup features two new teams to the league as Raymond's Bowl meets King's Row St. Regis Wins Key Game St. regis won a crucial game over Rusty Nail by a score of 7- 6 on Monday, July 31. Regis took an early lead only to lose it in the seventh inning when the Nail scored three runs. But the St. Regis ten came back with 2 runs of their own in the bottom half of the same inning to take a one run lead which they held until the final out. The game, which both teams needed for a playoff position, had three defensive gems to highlight play, which are worthy of creit. George Cadotte caught a line shot to the right of his second base position and dove for second base to double up a Rusty Nail runner in a key doubleplay in the third inning. Irish DeCicco batted down another hard hit line drive and threw the baiter out at first and Dave Sundby came up with possibly the longest running catch of the year on a deep fly to left center Joe Lafontaine had a pair of 2-run homers to lead the Regis attack Don Prazak had 2 hits and 2 RBI's while Irish DeCicco had a single and double plus a run scored and George Cadotte and Pete Smith had 2 hits Bill Huff slammed a solo homerun plus 2 singles in 4 at bats to help the Nail cause Ray Thelen had 2 hits and 2 RBI's and John Connell added 2 base hits and 2 runs scored. Bridge Hands Hiller's ,, Seventh Loss , Using a 7-run first inning, the Bridge defeated Hiller's in Tuesday night's first game, 13- 8, dropping Hiller's below the .500 mark at 6 wins, 7 losses. In the first inning, Old Bridge pounded out 8 hits, including doubles by Joe Dehn and Tim Althoff to score 7 times, with 5 runs coming after two men were out. Hiller's rallied with 3 in their half of the first, as Old Bridge was guilty of 3 errors in the inning. The Bridge added 3 more runs in the third and fourth innings, to take a 13-3 lead. Althoff's 3-run homerun was the big blow of the fourth in­ ning, driving in Greg Freund and Steve Rohrer who had singled. Hiller's narrowed the gap by scoring 3 runs in the fifth inning and added 2 more in the seventh, but the Bridge hung on to win 13-8 Althoff led the Bridge with a homerun and a double, good for 2 runs scored and 4 RBI's. Hautzinger Handles Coppermine Easily Hautzinger scored first and led throughout the contest to down Coppermine, 12-4, in Tuesday night's second game. Hautzinger scored twice in the first as Paul Morenz tripled following a Bill Funk single, with Morenz scoring on a flyout. In the third, Hautzinger added 6 runs to take an 8-0 lead. Seven hits, all singles and one Coppermine error put the game out of reach. Coppermine scored once in A CLOSE CALL-Joe Dehn of Old Bridge and Don Bentz of Johnsburg Tavern fall to the ground at home plate after Bentz tagged Dehn out while trying to score during a recent Men's 16- Inch game at the VFW. Dehn had rounded third to far on a ground ball and was caught in a rundown and later tagged out. The first inning miscue haunted Old Bridge, as they went on to lose the game by one run, 7-6 with another Old Bridge runner being thrown out at the plate in the last inning. The loss dropped them from first place. The win moved Johnsburg into a tie for second place with Old Bridge and Hautzinger Concrete, with all three teams one game behind Fox Hole.
