Mr. Stephen Darrow of Highwood, 111., addressed the Board and submit-- ted the tdbv;" statement : On the 10th November, On the 10th of November, 1923, at about 7;20 P. M. Mrs. Darrow and niy daughter, Eleanor,, 10 years old, left home to walk to the station of the Milwaukee Electric to. board the car for Evanston. When they arrived at the corner of Washington avenue and Railroad ayenue she heard shots Ared and one of the bullets struck Mrs. Darrow in the back, to the right of the spine, shattering the collar bone and rendering her right arm helpless. She fell to the ground and sereamed with pain Mrs. Juhrend, that hap pened to be walking with her, assisted hber to her feet, and with the help of a man who came to her l-rhle. she walked to her home, about & block from the place where she was shot. She was rushed to the Park Hospital as soon as and the bullet removed by . Speed. -- The extent of the injury was not known at that time and there was hopes that the pain would soon leave the arm and hand and that she would get back the use and action of her arm. Before she . was removed to the hospital a man came to the house and said he heard that a woman had been shot and--wanted--to-- know how sertous it was. It proved to be C. A. Burne, and said he was the man that had done the shooting. Later I learned that the man that Brune was shooting at and Brune himself ran within 12 or 15 feet of Mrs. Darrow while she lay on the ground screaming with pain, and neither of--them stopped to help her. Surely they could not pass that near to her, directly under an electric light, without seeing her and hearing her screams. Brune was so blood-- thirsty and intent on catching a man whom he thought had a bottle of moonshine whisky that he simply ignored' a poor woman that had been the innocent victim of one of his wild and unlawful shots. The acc+ dent has brought pain and sorrow to Mrs. Darrow that none. will know but her. Jt has brought sorrow to her and all her family, one .of the best little families. in the country. Mrs. --Darrow is a strong, beautifu! woman that has alway® done all her own work, and the pride and joy of her daily life was her home, her three beautiful children and herself. Since the accident Mrs. Darrow has suffered terrible pain in the entire arm and hand and has been help less, except to eat her meals with her left hand. She has been de-- prived of her joy and her pride. 'The children have been deprived of a mother's care, a--mother's caresses and a mother's training. Mrs. Dar-- row's begutiful shoulder and chest have been scarred for the remainder of her life, and one of the best women in the country has been made a cripple for the rest of her life, all because a dry agent wanted to cap ture a bottle of moonshine whisky for evidence. On February 14, 1924, she entered the Presbyterian Hospital and on the 20th of thhnonth an operation was performed the right upper chest in an attempt to remedy the nerve fhturbcnce which was causing pain n the right hand and arm, as well as paralysis of the arm. _ Nearly three hours were required to at-- tempt a dissection of the former scar and expose the nerves of the brachial plexus beneath the collar bone. There was found some lead em-- bedded in one of the main cords of the plexus. This was removed, with the resection of the cord and the subsequent suture of it. Most of the collar boue had to be removed during this operation, which loss is permanent. f m TsSsn' oL Since her last operation, although pain and paralysis continue, I bave some hope of improvement in the condition in the course of the next six© months. She requires care and daily massage treatments and is still confined to the hospital. * If the nerve suture and repair is a failure, there still remains a pos-- sibility of tendon transplantation in her forearm, looking: toward some improvement in the use of her hand. Her main disturbance involves the radial nerve, which has resulted in a drop wrist and loss of use of the fAngers and thumb. By transplanting other muscles, I may be able to re-- store this to a certain degree, but will wot make the attempt until the result of the nerve suture is def-- nitely ascertained. . At the best, she must look for-- ward to some permanent disability in the use of her right arm, the ex-- tent of which can not be stated at this time. If we take it as of this date there is practically total,loss of use of the right arm. Bill for service rendered to date is enclosed.
