A NIGHT TO REMEMBER "Editor: "I woke up at about ten minutes to eleven Friday night, Aug. 18.' I don't remember or know if it was the wind or the tree falling across the power lines that woke me. I raised the window shade and said to my husband, "Power lines are across the road. We jumped up and dressed as quickly as possible. Our only (thought was if we don't get out there and fast, someone will be killed. My husband went out first with a flashlight, and about five or ten minutes later I was out. It was raining and lightning bad. "We saw that we couldn't stop both sides, at least for not very long. I went to my car, took off phone wires from the hood, backed it up and turned around and drove it in the other direction. Then I saw a power line across in front of my car that went to my neighbor's house, so I got as close to the power line as I could. I put the blinking lights on and left the headlights on "We were having a very hard time stopping the traffic, and when we did the people argued with us telling us they would go toward McHenry and see if they could get help They met an Edison truck coming this way. They got here at about 12 o'clock He walked around for awhile. Then after several people almost hit wires, he blocked the road at the one end by putting the truck sideways. At about 12:20 a m Saturday morning, two men and a woman coming from the direction of McHenry almost hit my husband and they hit the wires I had gone into the house to light some candles because we thought the Edison crew would cut the lines When I was on my way back out, J was at the door when I saw the kids were not going to stop. When they hit. I started screaming. 1 saw the three kids running from the car in the direction of my husband, who helped them. "I had stepped out of our door an I heard them say the gas tank is going to explode, and I thought I'd better go back into the house I reached for the door handle and I got a shock. I was tingling all over and I stood there, afraid to go in and afraid to walk on the grass to my neighbor s When the car was burning, the Edison truck driver moved his truck At about 2:40 a m Saturday morning two Edison trucks came up and a few minutes later firetrucks came and then the police "I was very angry at the officials, but they said they were never notified "I still can't understand why the first Edison truck driver didn't cut the wires or notify the police, and why he drove away And why didn't the people, whose lives we saved at least drive back to McHenry and get help if possible? "In my opinion, this could have been avoided. The rotten tree should have been cut. "If my husband had left the road long enough to go for help, some of these people would not be with their loved ones today. And if one could have been there and seen those kids drive into the wires and the car burning, I m sure they would feel like I do today. I can't close my eyes without seeing that car go into the wires and hearing the awful sound, it's un forgettable. "After this nightmare was finally over, one of the policemen said to my husband, "It's not your place to get out here and endanger your life". Can you just imagine how my husband felt after standing in the rain and lightning for about three or four hours Or someone saying 'Man, you're crazy'! Yes, maybe we were just a little crazy, but if it wasn't for us crazy people several lives would have been lost, I'm sure, for we know how the people drive around here. "We are not writing this for praise or any award. Our pay came when we saw those kids run from that car, and if we could see them again, we'd give them each a great big kiss and hug. God was with us all that night. "If this happened for lack of communication or for what reason, our only concern is | - - < keeping this from happening again. "We were told this would never get in the papers, but I can't understand why not, because if isn't against anyone. "Doris and James Runions" REVIVAL TIME "Editor:. "A revival? In McHenry? How can this be? "We're pretty good people not like some of the com munities we've seen! There is, of course, some truth in almost all statements and in the preceding one, the truth is that there are a lot of very nice, good people in McHenry, but they are not always aware! "I consider myself one of the group, a complacent member of our area that did not wish to seek out any problems. I was happy in my ignorance. Being a mother of teen-agers I just naturally assumed that if I loved my children and brought them up in a decent home everything would be fine. Sounds good so far, right? And there is of course, some truth to these ideals. There, my fellow neighbors, lies (he problem...'some' truth! Whatever happened to the 'whole' or 'entire' truth? "Whole truth Number One is that the drug problem in our little city of McHenry is touching almost every household that has children. McHenry ranks "fifth" in the State of Illinois as regards Drug Abuse. It's affecting nin- year-olds in elementary school who are frightened of returning to school this fall because his classmates 'smoke pot' and are always after him to do it too! "I've heard of teenagers who can hardly figure two plus two when you ask them because they have consistently, over a period of several years, smoked their marijuana and now their brain is 'krispy' This concurs with recent findings that prove continued use of The McHenrv Plaindealer Established 1975 3*12 W*st Elm S(r*«t Phone 315-0170 McHenry. "Remember back to when your child was born and how grateful to God you were when it was perfect and healthy? Now visualize that same child, with his own free will, destroying a part of his brain! This is, of course, but one of many conditions we face today because of the drug abuse in our area. "Our children are to be a joy to us parents; when they begin to become a burdeh, something is wrong and all must look for the problem and help eradicate it. "There is something each and every one of us can do about saving our children of McHenry from the evils of drug abuse. Let's start a revival. But how do we do it? Easy, so easy in fact, you're probably going to say Ohhhhh! Let us set the J J * I month of September as our starting time, and from the first through to the thirtieth, each and every day, say a prayer, upholding our children and young people up to the Lord. "Citizens of McHenry, we are a loving, caring community. Let us stand together, a united front against this evil. Mark your calendars now, give just a few minutes each and every day We have bui une'Lord ...Help save our children! "Judy Page" Teacher: "Why, Tommy, Surely you know what the word mirror means. What do you look at after you've washed, to see if your face is clean?" Tommy: "The towel, Ma'am." Editor's Quote Book Only the van quished remember histol^y.
